Newcastle v Man Utd - Match preview and team news

Sunday 07 October 2012

Newcastle come into their eagerly awaited clash with Manchester United looking to reproduce the performance that saw the home side come away with a 3-0 victory in this fixture last season. Indeed, with Papiss Cisse seemingly back to scoring ways after his Europa League strike against Bordeaux alongside the Premier League’s current top scorer in Demba Ba, the Toon boss will be confident that his side has the firepower to cause United’s shaky rearguard problems.

Having rotated his squad in midweek, Pardew will bring back Davide Snaton, Jonas Gutierrez, Hatem Ben Arfa and Ba as the Magpies look to continue their unbeaten home record so far this season.

Meanwhile, Sir Alex Ferguson will be looking for his charges to respond after they crashed to their first defeat to Tottenham at Old Trafford in 23 years last week. The Champions League victory over CFR Cluj in midweek was not entirely devoid of concern either, with the Romanian side causing United several problems defensively, only for the striking brilliance of Robin Van Persie to ensure victory.

The Dutchman is set to take his place in the side alongside Wayne Rooney for the first time in the Premier League this season. Elsewhere, Jonny Evans looks set to take his place alongside Rio Ferdinand in central-defence despite suffering a dead leg in midweek, a welcome boost for Ferguson who has no other recognised central defender to call upon. Nani, Michael Carrick, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs are all looking for recalls but wingers Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young remain absent through injury.
