Tottenham set to rival Liverpool for Dries Mertens

Just days after PSV winger Dries Mertens was linked with a move to Anfield, the Enfield Independent are reporting that Tottenham Hotspur have now entered the chase for the prolific Belgium international.

Dries Mertens

Despite only arriving in Eindhoven in June 2011, the wide man has been an instant hit for the Eredivise side, notching 25 goals in 38 appearances for the club to date, including four in five so far this season.

25-year-old Mertens would provide Andre Villas-Boas with some variety in the wider positions, where he currently can only call upon Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon as genuine flank players.

A move to White Hart Lane would see Mertens link up with international compatriot Jan Vertonghen, who could well provide encouragement for the move after his successful start to his Tottenham career.

Tottenham enjoyed a 2-0 home win over Aston Villa to notch their fourth consecutive league victory and move up to fifth in the league table.
