Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has demanded that the Football Association take action against Robin Van Persie after alleging that the Manchester United striker had deliberately elbowed Magpies midfield Yohan Cabaye during United’s 3-0 win at the Sports Direct Arena on Sunday.

Dutchman Van Persie clashed with the France international in an off-the-ball second half incident after watching the incident back, Pardew told the BBC that Van Persie must be punished.

“He has looked at Yohan and he has elbowed him,” said Pardew. “I think that perhaps needs to be looked at, if I am honest. Yohan wouldn’t have gone down if he [Van Persie] hadn’t done something.”

Pardew went on to refer to an incident between Van Persie and Cabaye last season, when the then Arsenal captain was involved in an altercation with several Newcastle players in the dying moments of a 2-1 Gunners win at the Emirates Stadium.

“There’s a bit of history from last year and I don’t know if Robin has been caught up in that, but that was just a little bit unsavoury,” concluded Pardew.

After slumping to their first home defeat of the season against Sir Alex Ferguson’s men, Newcastle head into the international break entrenched in a mid-table 10th position.
