Mannone keen to stay at Arsenal after past loan moves

Vito Mannone has rejected the idea of going out on loan again after beginning the Premier League season as the first-choice Arsenal goalkeeper, the Daily Mirror has reported.

Mannone has stepped into the vacancy created by injuries to Wojciech Szczesny and Lukasz Fabianski, playing seven games already in this campaign having previously made only 10 appearances for the Gunners in the last six years.

The Italian has spent much of his Arsenal career on loan away from the club, having spells at Barnsley in 2006-07 and Hull City in 2010-11 and 2011-12. The latter period with the Tigers lasted for almost an entire season, with Mannone playing 23 times for the Championship club and almost leaving the Emirates Stadium to join Hull on a permanent basis.

But having performed well this season after being entrusted with the task of replacing Szczesny, Mannone has banished thoughts of another loan move, instead targeting a permanent billing as Arsene Wenger’s first-choice goalkeeper.

Mannone said: “I was ready to go and play somewhere else. I did some good work last year and think I deserved to be playing football - I couldn’t be a number three. But now things have changed and the boss seems happy with how I’m doing at the moment. I will do my best to become the number one.
