Liverpool boss Rodgers hits out at coverage of striker Suarez
Brendan Rodgers has criticised the coverage of Luis Suarez after the weekend’s Premier League draw between Liverpool and Stoke City, complaining that too much attention has been paid to allegations of diving by the Uruguay international and not an apparent stamp on Suarez by Potters defender Robert Huth, the Liverpool Daily Post has reported.
Huth appeared to make contact with the sole of his foot on the chest of Suarez early in the match but no action was taken at the time, nor did the Football Association charge Huth with an offence following the final whistle after the referee, Lee Mason, indicated in his match report that one of the team of officials had seen the altercation.
FA rules say that if a member of the officiating team has seen the incident and taken no action then nothing can be done retrospectively, even if the full extent of the coming together was not appreciated at the time.
Stoke manager Tony Pulis called for action to be taken against Suarez after he theatrically went to ground in the penalty area, but Pulis’ Liverpool counterpart believes the priorities of people within football have become skewed.
Rodgers said: “As manager of this football club I find it incredible that in nearly all the coverage about Luis Suarez this weekend, very little focus has been placed on the fact that he was actually the victim of a stamping incident within the first five minutes of the game. At this moment there seems to be one set of rules for Luis and another set for everyone else.
