Football Association to introduce code of conduct for England players

The Football Association is to introduce strict new guidelines on the way in which England internationals are to behave, the Guardian has reported, in light of disciplinary cases involving Chelsea pair John Terry and Ashley Cole. The code of conduct will also cover the use of social media and lay out clear punishments for off-field transgressions.
Distinct sections will be included within the code, which the newspaper reveals will be broken into three parts - behaviour applicable to international duty alone, behaviour applicable at all times, and how a breach of the code will be handled.
The Guardian adds that the current England squad were informed of the code by a 10-minute presentation on Monday but the code itself has been coming since earlier this year.
While its introduction is taking place in the shadow of the Terry racism row and Cole’s reaction to being criticised in the written report, David Bernstein, the chairman of the FA, said the code had been in development since January. The timing, therefore, is co-incidental.
Bernstein added: “The England players are representing their country, they're role models, their behaviour is incredibly important in respect of everything else we're trying to do.
“We're not going to ban players for life but it will be much clearer to the players, if they offend, what the list of offences potentially are.”
