Liverpool striker Suarez ignores diving allegations
Luis Suarez does not listen to pundits, fellow players or opposition managers who criticise him for diving, the Daily Telegraph has reported the Liverpool and Uruguay striker as saying.
Suarez and his predilection for going to ground again came under the spotlight during Liverpool’s 0-0 draw with Stoke City in the Premier League last weekend, where the striker fell theatrically and appealed in vain to the referee for a penalty to be awarded.
Stoke manager Tony Pulis described Suarez’s actions as “embarrassing” and called for a three-game ban for any player found to have dived, while Michael Kightly, the Stoke winger, called for referees to stamp down on diving, the newspaper adds.
The Liverpool manager, Brendan Rodgers, defended the player, claiming Suarez is the victim of a double standard that rails against diving and simulation but gives less attention to other incidents, such as what appeared to be a stamp by Stoke defender Robert Huth on Suarez that went unpunished both at the time and retrospectively.
Suarez said: “Everyone should focus on their own team. Those who want to talk can do so, I am not worried about what they say. Any manager can say what he wants about me but it doesn’t affect me. Let them carry on talking. Meanwhile I will continue to play football and to concern myself with my team and with what I do - and nothing more.”
