Djourou rejects rumours of Arsenal departure
Johan Djourou will not be leaving Arsenal for Serie A side Roma in January, the player’s agent has said, according to ESPN.
Djourou has yet to feature in the Premier League for Arsenal this season as Arsene Wenger has preferred combinations of club captain Thomas Vermaelen, France international Laurent Koscielny and experienced Germany centre-back Per Mertesacker.
It had been suggested that Djourou could leave Arsenal at the earliest opportunity, with Roma said to be a likely destination, but such talk has been scotched by Flavio Ferreria, Djourou’s representative.
Speaking to the Italian media, Ferraria said: “There has been absolutely no contact with Roma and I don't know where these rumours have come from. I met Johan recently, but we did not talk about Roma because there's really nothing to say.”
However, Ferraria left the door ajar somewhat, claiming that while Djourou has more than two years to run on his current contract, his camp may reconsider their position once the transfer window opens, and revealed that the player would welcome the chance to play in Italy one day. Ferraria added: “There is no real possibility that he will leave Arsenal as he is contracted to them until 2015. However, we will evaluate the current situation in January.”
Djourou, a Switzerland international, has been at Arsenal since 2004-05 and has more than 150 senior appearances under his belt, including 13 as part of a loan spell at Birmingham City in 2007-08.
