Stoke City striker Michael Owen insists he will not retire from England duty despite the fact that his last appearance for the Three Lions came over four years ago in a friendly against France in February 2008.

Michael Owen

Owen, who was awarded the 2001 European Footballer of the Year award, was once his country’s first-choice striker and looked almost certain to break Sir Bobby Charlton’s goal scoring record of 49 goals. However, the ex-Liverpool, Real Madrid and Manchester United striker’s England career never recovered from suffering a serious knee injury at the 2006 World Cup and he remains on 40 goals from 80 appearances.

However, according to Eurosport, Owen has refused to give up on the prospect of adding to that tally.

I’d never do that [retire from international football], really,” said Owen. “But I certainly don’t go to bed thinking I’m going to be playing for England again.

Since arriving at the Britannia Stadium on a free transfer in September, Owen has been restricted to substitute appearances for Tony Pulis’ men, who took a creditable point from Anfield to leave the Potters 12th in the Premier League table, with eight points from seven matches.
