Leiva wants Liverpool to focus on young players

Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva believes the club have to protect their young talents if they want the chance to have success in the near future, The Liverpool Echo reports.

The Brazilian called for the Anfield faithful to have patience with what Brendan Rodgers is introducing on Merseyside and used his own experience to show player development. Leiva initially struggled when he made his 2007 move to Liverpool, but now the 25 year old has turned into an integral part of the team.

Leiva is currently sidelined for two to three months with a thigh injury and has had the best opportunity to watch the young talents at Liverpool break into the first team. Players such as Suso, Andre Wisdom and Raheem Sterling have been given extended runs in the first team setup and Leiva believes the club’s lack of business in the transfer window will help the young players establish themselves.

The Brazilian international said: “We know the transfer window was difficult for us because we didn’t sign too many big players, but that is an opportunity for the young players. We know how difficult it is to play for this club, but I feel like supporters like to see young players coming through the Academy.”
