Lambert seeks O’Neill advice

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has admitted that he calls up former Villa boss Martin O’Neill for advice and hopes to emulate ‘a smudge of his success’, The Birmingham Mail reports.

Lambert was O’Neill’s captain at Celtic when the two had a trophy-laden spell between 2000 and 2005 and the Villa boss has kept contact with O’Neill, who is currently at Sunderland. When at Villa, O’Neill performed brilliantly and Lambert now has the task of restoring the Villa Park side back to the standards that the Sunderland boss set. Despite the two being opposing Premier League managers, Lambert is not afraid to ring the experienced O’Neill for help and will continue to do so in the near future.

The Villa boss said: “In management terms, I am still very young, I’ll make mistakes hands down, but as long as I can learn from them. I phone the gaffer because he’s been in it longer than me. There have been times when I’ve phoned him up for advice and I spoke to him before I came. He said it is a brilliant club with a massive fan base and never dissuaded me one bit.”

Lambert admits that he learnt so much from O’Neill and is looking to use the tips he learned from his former manager to make a success of his time at Villa Park. The Villa boss has a weekend off action whilst the internationals are taking place, but will be keeping an eye on some of his stars. Ciaran Clark has received a call-up to the Republic of Ireland squad and Lambert has spoken highly of the 23 year old, saying that he is a centre back despite thoughts about playing centre midfield and he will be ‘a top player’
