Swansea Focus - Swans look to turn form around against Wigan at Liberty Stadium

Monday 15 October 2012

Swansea had a wonderful, albeit short-lived, start to the season, but after a bout of injuries early on coupled with fatigue and international breaks, things have been pretty tough over the last few weeks. Things could be looking up however, as a magnificent second half performance saw the Swans fight back from two goals down to snatch a home draw with Reading. Their next fixture will see Wigan visit the Liberty Stadium.

Next week’s clash with the Latics, who have seen a very hit-and-miss run of form so far this campaign, will determine whether the Jacks will be able to turn their form around in time for their next few games against big name clubs. Manchester City will host the Jacks at the end of October, with games against Liverpool and Chelsea directly afterwards, Swansea need to build up momentum in spectacular fashion against Wigan.

A turnaround in form is surely inevitable however, especially considering Swansea’s first few games this campaign. The spark will undoubtedly light again. The Jacks’ games against the likes of Southampton, West Brom and Norwich before the festive period will surely provide them with a good opportunity to maintain their comfortable mid-table position come Christmas time.

Although Swansea’s Premier League campaign may not be going exactly to plan, things are looking particularly rosy for them in the League Cup. Liverpool host the Jacks in a few weeks time, and a win is looking quite achievable, considering the Merseyside outfit’s shaky start to the season and their need to rotate players to cope with their top-flight, cup and European commitments.

Liverpool currently sit 14th in the Premier League, with the Swans finding themselves placed a few spots above in 11th with 8 points, two more than their Northern counterparts. The Reds’ last top-flight outing saw them endure a goalless stalemate with Stoke City only days after being dealt a 3-2 defeat by Italian outfit Udinese in the Europa League.

All things considered, Swansea are looking pretty good to continue their League Cup run this year. The Premier League is undoubtedly their bread and butter, but the financial and confidence boost a good cup run gives will not go amiss for Michael Laudrup’s men.

The manager will surely be pleased to hear the Neil Taylor’s recovery is nearing its final few weeks. The Welsh full-back was initially ruled out for the whole season following an ankle-fracture suffered during a home clash with Sunderland at the start of September. Taylor is now out of his cast and will be walking again in the coming week or two, something nobody expected him to be doing this side of the New Year.

In the meantime, the Swans will look to take three points at home to Wigan in their next Premier League outing.
