The tragic loss of Besian Idrizaj

By Matt Bass

Monday 17 May 2010

The football community is once again in mourning following the untimely passing of another young talent. Swansea City’s Austrian striker Besian Idrizaj is understood to have died in his sleep on Friday night, following a suspected heart attack.

Idrizaj made only a handful of appearances for the Swans this season, having returned to the English game after a spell back in his Austrian homeland. He first arrived on our shores as a Liverpool player, but failed to make a senior appearance with the Reds. Loan spells with both Luton and Crystal Palace were to follow before returning to Austria. With a year remaining on his contract in South Wales, it was hoped that he would make further progress into the first team next season.

Following the completion of the season as far as Swansea were concerned, Idrizaj had returned to Austria to spend time with his family. His cause of death has not yet been confirmed, but it is believed that he had suffered a heart attack in his sleep, and died on Friday night. Tributes have flooded into the Liberty Stadium from all across the football world, as the community is once again united in grief over the loss of a talent that will never be fully realised.

If a heart attack is confirmed, his death will follow that of other players who have died in similarly unexpected circumstances. Marc-Vivien Foé collapsed on the pitch playing for Cameroon against Colombia in 2003, whilst Spain was rocked by the tragic passing of Daniel Jarque at the beginning of this season. In 2007, Motherwell’s Phil O’Donnell collapsed and died later in hospital.
