Tottenham news - Spurs bulk at Joe Cole wage demands, Redknapp rules out Ireland move, Modric to support England at World Cup

By Luke Ricketts

Saturday 29 May 2010

Every morning A Different League searches the nations press to bring you the latest goings on at Tottenham. Today:

Modric to support England at World Cup.

Tottenham Hotspur playmaker Luka Modric is hoping to see as many of his English teammates as possible at this summer’s World Cup in South Africa. The Spurs midfielder, who was rumoured to be leaving White Hart Lane, will not be taking part in the tournament after Croatia failed to qualify but has said he will be supporting England. He told Hotspur magazine: “I hope Ledley will be there, Daws, Tom, Azza, Crouchy, JD. Because of them I would like to see England win or at least go far in the tournament.”

Spurs bulk at Joe Cole wage demands.

Joe Cole’s £100,000 a week wage is too high for Tottenham says the Daily Star. A long-term knee injury has kept Cole from regular appearances for both club and country and it is still uncertain whether he will be going to South Africa next month for the World Cup. Spurs, Manchester United and Liverpool are all said to be keeping a close eye on Cole after Chelsea announced they would not be renewing the 28-year-old’s contract next season.

Redknapp rules out Ireland move.

Tottenham have said they will not be going after Manchester City midfielder Stephen Ireland in the summer. After a difficult season under Roberto Mancini, Ireland’s future at the club is uncertain but Harry Redknapp has said the 23-year-old is not a target. He told The Sun: “Stephen is undoubtedly a very good player but we have a lot of players who can fill that position. I like him but he won't be a target.”

I repeat what I've previously said - Joe Cole will be an expensive buy.We have players in our ranks that can do the job - but they need to be told that they must pull up their socks or leave. Lots of our lads feel that they are salaried to do their bit & that's it. They must take a look at the broad industry & the theme is - survival of the fittest. A glaring example is Bale who realised that his stay was dependent on his improved performane. I have confidence in our squad but they all need to add & contribute to achieve.

I'm trying to figure out why Joe Cole's handling are pushing for £100k per week. I understand that UK taxes will eat into that amount but if Chel$ea aren't willing to give that amount then what are the chances any other club in England will? If his handlers are smart they'll push for a signing on fee of £3-4M and ask for £70k. This way he'll get £3.6M per season and if the contract is for 4 years, get £14.5M. Add on a signing fee of £4M and that'll move it upto £18.5M which will be £2M less than his desired £5.2M per season or £20M for a four-year contract. Lastly, if Chel$ea aren't willing to give him £100k per week or more then what does that say about their rating of him? Good gravy, he's on £85k per week and they are willing to re-up at the same rate. And he wants more?

According to the Daily Bigot, the Liverpool deal to sign the Ranger's CB, Danny Wilson is off, as Benitez cannot afford the £2.5 million fee. I do not know the truth behind the story, but Harry would be better off signing Wilson than an Aston Villa reserve, with a high price tag.
