Benayoun set to complete Chelsea move

By Mushtaq Quraishi

Tuesday 15 June 2010

Liverpool winger Yossi Benayoun is on the verge of an expected move to Stamford Bridge according to the Daily Mail. The Israeli captain revealed his intentions to quit Anfield last month, having been frustrated at the lack of consistent opportunity presented to him by Rafael Benitez. However, the Spaniard has move on now – yet Benayoun is still in favour of a move to London.

The midfielder has had a mixed career with Liverpool. He was originally brought in as a replacement for Luis Garcia and Benayoun impressed for much of his time. The Israeli was particularly influential two seasons ago, when the Anfield side finished runners up in the Premier League. Despite such a positive season, Benayoun was used less often last campaign, with the arrival of Maxi Rodriguez and the re-emergence of Ryan Babel severely limiting the former West Ham man’s opportunities.

It was first thought that Benayoun would stay at Anfield now that Benitez had gone, however the midfielder is interested in moving to the champions and winning trophies. Benayoun will reportedly replace the outgoing Joe Cole, who is being chased by a whole host of clubs. At £6.5m, Benayoun would not prove that big a risk for Carlo Ancelotti, although it remains to be seen how much time he actually gets on the pitch.
