Chelsea news - Agent insists Drogba staying, Di Santo loan deal falls through, Wilkins: steady pre-season progress
Every morning A Different League searches the nations press to bring you the latest goings on at Chelsea. Today:
Agent insists Drogba staying.
Despite reported interest from Manchester City, Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay insists that Didier Drogba is not for sale, reports the Daily Mail. The Ivory Coast striker’s agent claimed to have been contacted by Manchester City but Gourlay stated: “Didier will be a Chelsea player next year. Didier is under contract.” It had been believed that the club’s interest in Fernando Torres could have seen them lining him up as Drogba’s replacement but Gourlay made it clear that is not the case: “The thing about this time of year is we always get (this). For our players to be in the news - it’s normal. But Didier Drogba will be a Chelsea player next year”
Wilkins: steady pre-season progress.
Chelsea assistant manager Ray Wilkins has told Chelsea’s official website that he is pleased with the progress the squad are making in pre-season. The Blues now have a full squad to choose from with the players involved in the World Cup now back in training. Ancelotti’s number two said: “Things are going great, the lads have come back in reasonably good condition and that’s the modern day professional, they work extremely hard to keep themselves in good shape.” Wilkins also gave credit to the work ethic of Chelsea’s younger players: “it has been rather patchy over the first couple of weeks but the first boys that came in worked so hard and the younger boys did well, and now it’s good to have the senior boys back.”
Di Santo loan deal falls through.
Feyenoord’s reported interest in Chelsea striker Franco Di Santo appears to be over after technical director Leo Beenhakker confirmed the cancellation of a season-long loan deal. Beenhakker was quite definite on the reason for the deal’s collapse as he spoke to Algemeen Dagblad: “Chelsea requires a contribution towards the salary of di Santo and we can not afford that. I do have more irons in the fire, though no guarantees. I’ll keep searching for a striker.” Chelsea seem keen to allow the 21-year-old Argentine further chance to develop after spending last season on loan at Blackburn Rovers.
