Manchester United news - Capello backs Rooney, Giggs delighted with squad quality, United warned over fan-base

By Alex Bath

Friday 03 September 2010

Every morning A Different League searches the nations press to bring you the latest goings on at Man Utd. Today:

Capello backs Rooney.

Fabio Capello has promised Wayne Rooney will return to form in style. Talking to The Daily Mail Capello assured England, and Manchester United fans: “I monitored him during the last game that he played against West Ham. Rooney runs a lot around the pitch, he's free to move where he decides to go. Rooney will play tomorrow in style.” Rooney endured a torrid World Cup with Capello's England. Playing through the pain of an ankle injury, Rooney failed to find the net during England's four games and never showed the talent he does for his club. Rooney finally got his name back on the scoresheet with a penalty against West Ham and Fabio Capello clearly hopes that this is the start of a return to form for the striker.

Giggs delighted with squad quality.

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has praised the depth of the Manchester United squad. Following the confirmation of United's official 25-man Premier League squad, the Welshman has declared United prepared for the “long season” ahead. Giggs told The Daily Mirror: “The squad is looking really strong. We've got Rio (Ferdinand) to come back in, (Gary) Neville hasn't played yet, and Anderson is back too. So it's looking really good.” Rio Ferdinand, Gary Neville and Anderson joined Owen Hargreaves in coming back from injury to make the final squad.

United warned over fan-base.

A spokesman for the Independent Manchester United Supporters Association has warned in The Sun that the failure to sell out the club’s season ticket allocation is a “significant” moment for the owners, the Glazer family. Duncan Drasdo warned “despite a ticket price freeze and an unprecedented marketing campaign, there are still thousands of season tickets and hospitality packages unsold.” Drasdo declared: “We have clearly reached a tipping point in the Glazers' ownership.” United fell 2 000 sales short of their season target, but Chief Executive David Gill dismissed the concerns by pointing out: “We've sold more season tickets than the capacity of most Premier League grounds and our executive seat sales are on track in a different market.”
