Newcastle news - Carroll asked to keep feet on ground, Campbell still holds England desire, No loan deals fro youngsters

By Bryan Waters

Friday 03 September 2010

Every morning A Different League searches the nations press to bring you the latest goings on at Newcastle. Today:

Carroll asked to keep feet on ground.

Hotshot striker Andy Carroll has been asked to keep his feet on the ground and not get over excited by his blistering start to the season, the Newcastle Journal reports. Manager Chris Hughton is pleased with Carroll’s progress, who has scored four goals in three games at the start of the season, but he does not want the striker to lose focus. Hughton said: “Andy is a striker and the one thing you know with strikers is that things can go badly for them as well as good. We know that, while he is scoring goals now, there will be a period when he isn’t and that is when the real test comes.” Carroll aggravated an ankle problem and had to pull out of the recent batch of under-21 games for England, but should be fit to play in Newcastle’s next Premier League game against Blackpool.

Campbell still holds England desire.

Newcastle United defender Sol Campbell still has ambitions to play for England, the Guardian reports. The 35-year-old is entering the twilight end of his career, but still has the passion and the fire to represent his country, he believes. The defender said: “I have still got it. I still have the passion, the fire in my belly. I want to win. But you just can't do anything about it any more. So I am not going to fight. I am going to fight on the pitch for Newcastle and if it comes to the stage where someone says can you fight for England then I will fight for England. But I am not going to go on about it. It is just not worth it.” Campbell never retired from England selection and would be ready for international duty if England boss Fabio Capello wanted him.

No loan deals fro youngsters.

Newcastle boss Chris Hughton is resisting the urge to loan out his under-21 stars, despite having 45 players on Newcastle books that are under 21, the Newcastle Chronicle reports. Players such as Nile Ranger and Tamas Kadar are rumoured to be going on loan to Championship sides, but Hughton has said he will loan out other youngsters that have less of a shot of playing than Ranger and Kadar. Hughton said: “We don’t need to make those decisions this week, we’ll look at it again. We don’t expect many more going out on loan, possibly one, maybe two.” The big shock of the squad was the inclusion of wantaway defender Steven Taylor, who has put in a transfer request, but Hughton is looking to keep the 24-year-old, as Taylor nurses his way back from injury.
