Newcastle Utd news - R. Keane bid ready, Campbell plays, Carroll fit for Blackpool

By Bryan Waters

Wednesday 08 September 2010

Every morning A Different League searches the nations press to bring you the latest goings on at Newcastle. Today:

R. Keane bid ready.

Newcastle boss Chris Hughton is prepared to go back to a move for Tottenham striker Robbie Keane, the People reports. The Republic of Ireland striker has been uncertain of his future at Spurs and spent the latter half of last season on loan at SPL side Celtic. New signing Rafael van der Vaart is expected to play in an advanced role off the main striker this season at Tottenham, so a move to St. James Park for Keane could be a chance for regular first team football. The move would be a loan deal for Newcastle and they are prepared to make him their highest paid player to ensure a move to the club.

Campbell plays.

Sol Campbell played an hour for the Newcastle reserves last night and looked comfortable, the official Newcastle United website reports. The 35 year old captained the side against Liverpool and came out with a 2-2 draw. Campbell was the only player with Premier League experience in the reserve team at Whitley Park last night as reserve team coach Peter Beardsley went with a squad full of youth. The goalscorers for the Magpies were highly rated striker Phil Airey and Samuel Ameobi, brother of first team striker Shola, to earn Newcastle a point.

Carroll fit for Blackpool.

Manager Chris Hughton is confident that striker Andy Carroll will be ready for the next Premier League game against Blackpool, Sky Sports reports. The 21 year old striker, who has scored 4 in 3 Premiership games at the start of the season, aggravated an ankle problem in their draw over Wolves in the last Premiership game. Carroll subsequently pulled out of the under 21 squad, but Hughton has no concerns over Carroll’s fitness. The Newcastle gaffer said: "We're confident he'll be OK for Blackpool, but as always we'll continue to assess his fitness throughout the week."
