Ligue 1 Week 15 action - Bordeaux bounce back to the top

By Adam Faulkner

Wednesday 02 December 2009

Bordeaux returned to the summit after victory in Week 15 of Le Championnat. Les Girondins recorded an impressive 3-0 win at Nancy, opening up a two point gap at the top in the process. The victory was Bordeaux’s first in four attempts away from the Stade Chaban Delmas and capped an impressive week for the French team after a Champions League defeat of Juventus on Wednesday evening.

Bordeaux took the lead after 25 minutes, with midweek goalscorer Fernando opening the scoring with a low struck shot. Their advantage was extended by the Brazilian Wendel with a delightful chip, which was no more than Bordeaux deserved after a dominant attacking display. Yoan Gouffran rounded off the scoring after being sent clear by the impressive Wendel, slotting into the corner. Bordeaux will feel this result is massive in kicking on with their domestic season after some lacklustre recent away performances, and took advantage of Lyon’s disappointing home point with Rennes.

Rennes sharpshooter Asamoah Gyan put his side ahead with his eighth goal of the season, and fourth in five outings, to silence the Stade Municipal de Gerland. Les Gones, however, hauled themselves level just before half-time with striker Lisandro Lopez netting a brilliant free-kick from outside the area. The match ended as a stalemate, which is Lyon’s third consecutive draw in Le Championnat and will surely be seen as a missed opportunity to join Bordeaux at the top of Ligue 1.

Auxerre saw their brief stint at the top - the first time in seven years - eradicated after narrowly losing to PSG in Paris. The team from the capital narrowly shaded the match with PSG midfielder Jeremy Clement netting midway through the second half to secure victory. The away side lacked some much needed firepower in the absence of influential Polish striker Ireneusz Jelen and drop down to third following the defeat. On a more worrying note for the hosts, former France international goalkeeper Gregory Coupet suffered a broken leg in the match after trying to clear the ball. The stopper is expected to be sidelined for over three months.

At the wrong end of the table, basement club Grenoble were cruelly denied their first win of the season after Lorient’s Kevin Gameiro salvaged a point for the hosts deep into stoppage time. Grenoble found themselves in a winning position after Daisuke Matsui and Jimmy Juan overturned Bostjan Cesar’s first-half own-goal. Disgruntled Grenoble will feel they did enough to record their first victory of the season but were pegged back in the third minute of stoppage time to a draw. GF 38 will feel that their season is on the up after a third successive draw against quality opposition following stalemates with Lyon and Monaco.

Elsewhere, Le Mans and Saint Etienne played out a 1-1 draw at the Stade Omnisports Leon Bollee in a relegation battle, and Toulouse heaped further misery on Boulogne following a 1-0 defeat. Marseille looked tired after their Champions League draw with AC Milan and succumbed to a 1-0 defeat at Lens, with striker Eduardo heading home in the 93rd minute. Lille battered Valenciennes 4-0 at the Stadium Lille Metropole with Gervinho grabbing a brace and Sochaux narrowly defeated Nice to move further away from the relegation area.
