Benfica snap up Garay from Madrid
Benfica have agreed a deal to sign defender Ezequiel Garay from Real Madrid for an undisclosed fee. It had been widely speculated that Garay would be joining the Portuguese giants as a makeweight in the deal which saw left-back Fabio Coentrao move in the opposite direction. Benfica’s official website has now confirmed the signing of the 24-year-old who had been occupied on international duty with Argentina at the Copa America.
Garay enjoyed a fruitful spell at Racing Santander where he became recognised both for his defensive prowess and potency in the opposition’s penalty box. However, the centre-back saw his career stall at the Bernabéu and he featured just eight times at Madrid last season. Following boss José Mourinho’s purchase of French starlet Raphael Varane, it became clear that the defender was regarded as surplus to requirements. As he moves to Benfica, he is likely to form a central defensive partnership with Luisao and will be expected to fill the void left by the sale of David Luiz to Chelsea.
