Arsenal news - Toffees want £18m for Jags, Mata dismisses links, Vieira: Gunners must strengthen

By Luke Ricketts

Friday 22 July 2011

Toffees want £18m for Jags.

Arsenal will have to offer £18m if they are to successfully purchase Phil Jagielka from Everton, according to Daily Mail. The Gunners have already had a £12 million bid for the defender rejected and will have to meet the Toffees nonnegotiable asking price if they are to have any chance of landing their target. The 28-year-old signed a new four-year contract with Everton in March, which is why Everton are holding out for such a considerable sum. Jagielka was an important fixture at Goodison Park last season and, should he leave, would be a huge loss to David Moyes.

Mata dismisses links.

Valencia forward Juan Mata has rubbished rumours he could be moving to Arsenal this summer by saying he has no interest of leaving the Spanish club.

Mata is on Arsene Wenger’s shortlist for the summer transfer window but would come at a considerable price – as much as £26m according to the Metro. Alex Ferguson has also earmarked the player but is also in the market for a central midfielder to replace Paul Scholes, who retired at the end of last season. Despite his many admirers, Mata insists he is happy at Valencia and a move elsewhere is out of his hands.

Vieira: Gunners must strengthen.

Patrick Vieira is convinced Arsenal must get stronger if they are to have any chance of challenging for the title next season. The Frenchman, who captained the Gunners’ 2004 championship winning team that went the entire season undefeated, fears Arsene Wenger will have to spend lavishly this summer if his former club are to end their dire six year drought without silverware. Vieira believes Arsenal’s brand of football is much faster than it was during his playing days with the club, but it lacks the strength and depth to realistically contend the two Manchester clubs and Chelsea. He told The Sun: “They lost the physical aspect but have gained in the technical aspect. Maybe it's the balance you need to find to win trophies.”
