Arsenal news - Fabregas on verge of Barcelona move, Newcastle join race for Bendtner, Depleted Gunners set for season opener

By Luke Ricketts

Friday 12 August 2011

Fabregas on verge of Barcelona move.

According to reports from the Telegraph, Cesc Fabregas could be officially unveiled as a Barcelona player as early as tomorrow. Arsenal are yet to release a statement to confirm whether an agreement has been made with the Catalan club, though reports in Spain suggest a fee of £31 million has been accepted. The 24-year-old did not feature for Arsenal in pre-season because of injury and has been ruled out of Saturday’s clash with Newcastle along with team-mate Samir Nasri, whose move to Man City may be just as imminent. It has been a long time coming for Fabregas who is expected to sign a five-year contract at the Camp Nou after joining the Gunners in 2003.

Newcastle join race for Bendtner.

Newcastle have joined Stoke in the chase for unwanted Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner according to the Mail. The Danish striker is considered to be surplus to requirement by manager Arsene Wenger and looks likely to leave the club before the end of the month. The Potters’ have already offered £8 million for the 23-year-old striker who was only used sparingly last season, making just 17 appearances for the Gunners in the league. Bendtner may be forced even further down the Arsenal pecking order if he chooses to stay, with the acquirement of Lille striker Gervinho who already has goals to his name from pre-season.

Depleted Gunners set for season opener at Newcastle.

Arsenal get their 2011/12 season underway tomorrow away to Newcastle in what will be a testing encounter without Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri. Arsene Wenger will be forced to pick a starting XI without a number of regular players in the line-up, including Jack Wilshere and Abou Diaby who are both ruled out through injury. Theo Walcott and Thomas Vermaelen are both expected to return to the squad after long-term injuries last season. The last time these sides met at St. James’ Park, Newcastle pulled off one of the greatest comebacks in Premier League history, coming back from a four-goal deficit at half-time to draw the game four apiece.
