Arsenal news - Wenger may face UEFA punishment, Nasri could play against Liverpool, Willian wants London move

By Luke Ricketts

Friday 19 August 2011

Wenger may face UEFA punishment.

UEFA have opened a formal disciplinary against Arsene Wenger after he disobeyed the obligations of his touchline ban, during Arsenal’s Champions League qualifier against Udinese. Wenger was forced to watch his side’s 1-0 victory against the Italian club from the stands at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday but continued to relay orders to his assistant Pat Rice on the sideline via First Team Coach Boro Primorac. UEFA stopped the Arsenal boss from doing it in the second half after realising the Frenchman’s sly loophole in his punishment and will decide on Monday whether to take matters any further. Arsenal have hit back at EUFA in light of their actions, claiming they had asked whether Wenger was permitted to communicate to the bench prior to the match. Wenger told the Mirror: “I am completely surprised, but we are completely open to any enquiry from UEFA. We have nothing to hide and I don't think we have done anything wrong.”

Nasri could play against Liverpool.

Samir Nasri may feature in Arsenal’s starting XI against Liverpool on Saturday despite his imminent departure to Manchester City, according to the Telegraph. The Frenchman is expected to complete his transfer to the Citizens over the weekend although Arsene Wenger is still intent on getting the most out of 24-year-old before he leaves, by naming him in the squad for Saturday’s game. The sale of Nasri combined with that of Cesc Fabregas will bring in over £50 million to the Gunners who are still expected to do business in the transfer window before it closes at the end of the month. Defenders Gary Cahill and Phil Jagielka have both been linked with a move to the Emirates this summer and are well within their budget, although recent injuries and player exits in the midfield department may force Wenger to find replacements.

Willian wants London move.

Shakhtar Donetsk striker Willian is hopeful Arsenal, Tottenham or Chelsea will make a bid for him before the transfer window closes on 31 August. The 23-year-old Brazilian signed for the Ukrainian club for £9.3 million in 2007 but is desperate to move to London, purportedly impartial to any of the three London clubs. He told the Daily Mail: “I like Chelsea and Arsenal’s styles a lot. I’d be very happy to play for Tottenham too and help get them back into the Champions League. They’re a very big club.”

Willian appears adamant about his intentions having already rejected a move Benfica, insisting he would be better suited to London living and English football: “There are so many people, lots of shops and restaurants. It’s like Sao Paulo. I think my style of play would suit the Premier League.”
