Newcastle Club Focus – Coloccini to commit to club?
Newcastle captain Fabricio Coloccini could be set to commit his long term future to the club. The central defender has once again impressed this season and has been a major factor in the team’s ability to conceded only four goals in their opening seven league games. Alongside Steven Taylor, he has formed a formidable defensive partnership that is up there with the very best in the league. The Argentine has also stepped up well to the mantle of captaining the Magpies despite some initial doubts over his appointment.
With less than two years remaining on his current deal the hope will be to tie him down onto a long term contract as soon as possible. The chances of that may have improved significantly following his fellow countryman Jonas Gutierrez’s decision to extend his deal to 2015. Speaking about his future Coloccini said: “I'm very happy here, so we will see what happens. It was important for Jonas to get his new deal too. Then he scored against Wolves, so it was a good week for him."
However, for Coloccini to sign a new contract there may have to be compromises from the player and the club’s management. The 29-year-old is one of the few top earners left at the club and he is unlikely to be offered similar terms to what he is currently reputed to be earning. But on current performances Newcastle can ill afford to lose their inspirational captain.
Newcastle midfielder Dan Gosling could be set for a loan move with his current opportunities restricted due to the players ahead of him in the pecking order. So far this season Gosling has been restricted to just three appearances with two of those coming in the Carling Cup. In recent games he has struggled to even make the bench with the likes of Danny Guthrie and Sylvain Marveaux providing the cover. He has been linked with a move to Championship strugglers Doncaster who have recently appointed former Newcastle coach Dean Saunders as manager. A possible short-term move may suit Gosling who is in need of match practice after suffering a serious knee injury.
Gosling was involved for the reserve team in midweek as a strong side beat Bolton 3-0. Frenchman Marveaux further underlined his talent with two goals sandwiching a strike from Sammy Ameobi. Senior players Peter Lovenkrands and Danny Guthrie were also involved in the match at Leyland. Hatem Ben Arfa has also been in line for feature for the second string but he has returned to his native Tunisia for family reasons.
