Do Liverpool supporters have cause to question Dalglish?

By Paul O'Meara

Monday 23 January 2012

In a period of success born midway through the 1980s, Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish delivered three first division titles in six years, but in this, his second tenure, the narrative seems less prestigious. Their latest defeat at the hands of Bolton Wanderers not only brought an incensed post-match reaction from the Scot, but also from supporters who are starting to scrutinize their esteemed manager.

With the latter’s two most immediate predecessors, Rafael Benitez and Roy Hodgson, it was easier for supporters to vent their frustration and disappointment, due to a lack of affiliation connecting the club with both men. With Dalglish the circumstances are warped, owing to the fact he is worshipped by Liverpool supporters for all the glory he manufactured over a decade. This brings added pertinence to grumblings from the club’s supporters on Twitter, who are beginning to wonder whether the club’s greatest ever player, is the still the man to disrupt Manchester’s domestic stranglehold.

The phrase ‘work in progress’ is continually uttered when discussing the Anfield side, but in one sense it is an indefinite notion; where as success can be measured, when does ‘work in progress’ become failure? Within the last year Dalglish has brought in just under £100m worth of players, a majority of whom incessantly fail to impress. At times this season Liverpool have shown promise but have generally been underwhelming and inconsistent. Their well-documented home form is a legitimate worry and with such a massive deficiency, all talk of Champions League qualification should be banished.

Dalglish and his assistant Steve Clarke have evidently shored up the backline - ignoring the Bolton defeat, which only signified how they miss Lucas Leiva - but there is a massive disparity between the defensive assuredness and their limp attack. Dalglish’s public backing for the underachieving Stewart Downing, proclaiming: [Downing is] better than I thought he was going to be," was mystifying. This for a player who has contributed no goals or assists in 1671 minutes of Premier League football for his new club.

As co-founders of the original top four, Liverpool now find themselves - deservedly so - outside the top six and in an unfamiliar footballing territory. The cup competitions represent the best chance for success, although two Mancunian beasts stand in their way. They have a big hindrance of not scoring enough goals and a £35m striker who is central to that malaise. Dalglish was unequivocal in his damning report on the Reebok Stadium defeat and many will expect a response when Manchester City visit Anfield for the second-leg of their Carling Cup battle. Saying that, many expected this same wounded animal to appear following the unimaginative performance against Stoke, but they regressed further.

Liverpool supporters questioning their manager - and with him being one their club’s most iconic figures - is the embodiment of displeasure, and furthermore proves there is genuine cause for concern. Club luminary or not, Dalglish should not consider himself above criticism and if such a vacuous theme continues in his team’s football, he may be challenged further.

i agree with amit... all this 20 million a player signing kk and commoli made is overpriced... i think ferguson, wenger , redknapp even coyle and oneil definitely laugh at liverpool back then with all this so called superstar signing....i can see it then and it proves me right that they are all below the grader players.... and one question? do the owners really have money to spend...cause we have commoli..the big spender who spend lavishly on everything.....

liverpool dissapoint me so much...ive been supporting this club for 30 years....and the last 20 years are shit to watch....their trnsfer policy are rotten...the scouts are wasteful brats..... cant they see the talents that smaller clubs can easily identify... odemwinge ( i see his talents and pace during world cup)...demba ba (we already saw he is good while in west ham)..moussa sow (his talent didnt require 35 million ) so does ben arfa and van vart before samller clubs bought them, .....on new talents ... why cant we signed xerdan shakiri, lazar markovic, marko marin, gaitan, and those africans from french, russian and belgium leagues.... they are fast, slick and cheap.....why must we keep on signing stupid, slow, arrogant players who comes with a hefty price tag...... please liverpool. at least play the so called superkids u have : sterling, suso, pachecho godsake.

It is quite disheartening to be a die hard Liverpool supporter. What I don't understand is why King Kenny tends to change a winning team. This in my view disturbs the cohesion and as a result, there is lack of consistency. Andy Carrol has failed to deliver. Is it late for KD to buy a striker and midfielder so that our team can catch up and finish in a respectable position?

I dont think the City game is the one in which we want the response, as no doubt K.D. will be more interested in holding what he already has, but I don't think he has the defence to do it, City have too many potential scorers. My main problem with the situation is our lack if variety up front. Andy Carroll will come good eventually but he is the only potential out and out striker we have, we desperatly need a different type of player that can score goals NOW in the league, the top four is not out of reach yet, but soon will be if nothing is done in this window
