Redknapp begins court case for tax evasion
Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp’s court case for tax evasion has commenced at Southwark Crown Court in South London, in a trial that is expected to last for two weeks, reports the Telegraph.
Redknapp is charged with two counts of cheating the public revenue, dating back to his time as Portsmouth manager between 2002 and 2004. Former Portsmouth chairman Milan Mandaric is also implicated in the charges, which state that the pair attempted to avoid paying tax on payments totalling £295,000, paid by Mandaric into a Monaco bank account opened by Redknapp.
The case states that the payments were made “with intent to defraud and to the prejudice of HM Revenue and Customs as a result of or in connection with Henry James Redknapp’s employment and as a reward for services.” The trial is likely to impact Redknapp’s opportunities to attend training, though he has insisted it will not affect his attendance at games.
