Defoe optimistic despite Spurs defeat to Man City

By Andy Brunning

Tuesday 24 January 2012

Jermain Defoe believes that, despite their 3-2 defeat at the hands of Manchester City on Sunday, Tottenham can still target a top two finish in the Premier League, reports The Mail.

Defoe had a chance to win the tie in the 91st minute, stretching to put the ball the wrong side of the post, before Mario Balotelli’s penalty won the game for Manchester City. But the England international insists that Spurs can take a great deal of encouragement from their performance.

“I think we can still look up,” he said. “We were unfortunate not to get a point or even win the game. We showed a lot of character to come back from 2-0 down - it was unbelievable.

“Overall we deserved a point. Now there are still a lot of games left to play - big games for us - and those are the ones you want to play in; the pressure you want as a footballer. Every game we play from now on is a cup final.”
