Tottenham vs Wigan - Match preview and prediction

By Bryan Waters

Tuesday 31 January 2012

Harry Redknapp looks to put his ongoing court case behind him and steer Tottenham past Wigan at White Hart Lane and get back to winning ways.

Tottenham were beaten by a last gasp Mario Balotelli penalty at Manchester City in their last league outing, but could have easily won if Jermain Defoe had scored his glorious chance. Defoe is a doubt for the game against Wigan after picking up a hamstring injury in Friday’s FA Cup win at Watford. Redknapp was unhappy with his team’s performance at Vicarage Road and will look for them to improve if they want to keep third place. Spurs’ season has been great and they will look to continue their great run of form at home, having only lost once at home this season. Redknapp is working to sign Louis Saha from Everton and has allowed Vedran Corluka to move to Bayer Leverkusen on loan until the end of the season.

Wigan will see new signing Jean Beausejour go straight into the squad for the trip to White Hart Lane, but Hugo Rodallega has been dropped amid speculation of a move to Spurs. Reports state that the Colombian will remain in London to discuss terms with Spurs before the 11 o’clock deadline, but one player who will not leave the DW Stadium is Victor Moses. Roberto Martinez wants to keep the winger and should start him against Spurs tonight. Defender Antolin Alcaraz has not recovered from a groin problem and will not feature. Wigan are rooted to the bottom of the table and in their last league outing, they were beaten 3-1 by QPR at Loftus Road. Three points adrift of the two other teams in the relegation zone is a worrying place for Martinez, especially after Blackburn and Bolton have picked up vital wins in recent games.

Martinez’s side will be desperate for a positive result at White Hart Lane, but Spurs have been scintillating at times this season and were unlucky to lose at the Etihad Stadium. Redknapp’s court case should not affect the squad, who will beat Wigan easily.
