Downing believes Liverpool deserved win

Liverpool winger Stewart Downing insists that the Reds were worthy of more than a point in their 1-1 draw with his former side Aston Villa at Anfield on Saturday, liverpoolfc.tv reports.

Luis Suarez' late header cancelled out Villa's lead from early on in the game, but the Reds were thwarted all game by Shay Given as well as the woodwork. Liverpool have won five games at home this season and drawn eight times, despite the amount of chances they have created in those draws. The Reds travel to Blackburn on Wednesday looking to improve dramatically on their position in the table, where they sit eighth and a point behind fierce Merseyside rivals Everton.

Downing believes his side should have won the game, but hopes they can carry the momentum from that game into the midweek game at Ewood Park. The 28 year old has drew criticism for his performances in a Liverpool shirt this season and failed to impress yesterday, being replaced with 25 minutes to go. Downing still holds faith in his teammates and believes they will pick up three points against Blackburn.

Downing said: "I thought we deserved to win - we created a lot of chances, but we didn't finish them off. They took the lead and made it difficult for us. They were probably delighted with the draw, but we've stopped the losing run, so that's a positive. We have to keep drumming the same message into ourselves - keep being positive, keep creating chances and it will fall for us in the end."
