Chamakh told to focus on football

Sunday 08 April 2012

Arsenal striker Marouane Chamakh has been told to focus on his football after the Moroccan international was pictured smoking a shisha pipe following the side's 2-1 defeat to QPR, BBC Sport reports.

The picture of the 28 year old was posted on the social networking site Twitter and Chamakh's future at the club has been plunged further into doubt following the incident. Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was disappointed with the Moroccan's decision and has called for him to concentrate on football, if he wants to stay at the Emirates Stadium next season. Chamakh was an unused substitute against QPR and could be dropped from the squad for today's home clash with Manchester City.

Wenger said: "It's not the best thing to do. Will he stay at the club next season? It's too early to say. We want him to focus completely - without smoking."

The man keeping Chamakh out of the Arsenal line-up is captain Robin van Persie, who has 26 Premier League goals so far this season. Wenger has hailed Van Persie as a 'strong contender' for the PFA Player of the Year award after the Dutchman's scintillating displays this season. Van Persie's form is in stark contrast to Chamakh, who only has one goal from his 17 appearances in an Arsenal shirt this season. Chamakh joined the Gunners from Bordeaux in 2010, but has failed to recapture the early form he showed upon arrival and could be heading for the exit door this summer.
