Arsene Wenger - Should He Stay or Should He Go?

By Rahul Bhatt

Friday 12 February 2010

Following in a turbulent few weeks for his Arsenal side, A Different League looks into Arsene Wenger's position as manager of the club. Is it time the Frenchman packed up his belongings and headed out of north London after almost 14 momentous years or is he still the best man for the job?

Go- The Gunners have failed to turn their potential into results in the last five years. For a club the size of Arsenal, every season that passes without a trophy mounts pressure on Arsene Wenger - disgruntled fans spray internet forums and phone-in shows blasting Wenger’s style, tactics and stubbornness not to spend in the transfer window. The growing frustration to fill the dusty trophy cabinet at the Emirates increased as Manchester United completed a clean sweep of Europe two seasons ago and Chelsea look favourites to land this year's title. The Gunners have slipped drastically from the glory days of the ‘Invincibles’ of 2004, to a side that is constantly fighting for fourth place and in the process have been labelled a selling club. As soon as Arsenal finally have a side that gels and looks to make for genuine title challengers, they come up short and a key player is sold or leaves at the end of every season which weakens the side. This forces Wenger to rely on youth and the fans to once again wait a few more years before the team can mature into contenders for the final push.

Many believe that this frustrating cycle can be alleviated by Wenger leaving. If the Frenchman is unwilling to change his policies and keep up with the inflated budget of the English game, then is it time for a change in the Arsenal dugout? While Wenger sticks bravely to his policies and tactics, Arsenal will find it hard to keep top quality players like Cesc Fabregas and Robin van Persie who are often targeted by other clubs. The Gunners need to keep up with the rest of the big four who change with the times of huge cash injections adjusting to the current economic climate. Wenger has often told the press he has the funds to buy but won’t hastily spend. His candour of Arsenal’s kitty has further angered fans in the past who ask: “If he has the money and doesn’t spend, why does he tell us?” If funds are available at Arsenal, should Wenger not buy and strengthen the squad instead of waiting for spent forces like Mikael Silvestre and Sol Campbell to sign for free?

Meanwhile, Wenger would be welcomed with open arms at Real Madrid who have been pursuing him in recent years. He has brought an unrivalled football style to this country since arriving in north London in 1996 and if he were to leave or was forced out of Arsenal it would be a sad state to see his version of the beautiful game go with him. But with limited resources, players being hounded from every angle, five barren years and a stubborn policy on spending, will Arsenal win anything further with Arsene Wenger? The Premier League sees managers sacked before being given the time to settle as foreign owners demand instant success, has he taken Arsenal as far as he can?

Stay - A run of 10 unbeaten games saw Arsenal reach the Premier League summit by mid-January. Sunday’s defeat to Chelsea saw them drop back down to third in the pecking order and after losing to Manchester United, blame is falling heavily on manager Arsene Wenger. Wednesday's victory over Liverpool relieved the pressure a little and gained valuable ground on the leaders but a title charge is still only barely visible. While many argue that the Frenchman’s time is up, optimists can only highlight the positives Wenger has brought to their club. Arsenal without Wenger is almost unthinkable, a student without a master - lost and unstable with no sense of direction. Wenger has forever been a pragmatist and has been forced to defend his ideals on countless occasions, especially at this crux point of every season claiming he will stick with his policies and football philosophy of nurturing young talent rather than spending hastily in the transfer window,.

With the apparent need of a striker in the ranks, Wenger’s transfer policy has never been reflected at a better time. It seems Wenger has opted to wait till Bordeaux striker Marouane Chamakh’s contract runs out in the summer so he is able to snag him on a free transfer rather than pay for the Moroccan in January and have a proven striker in his ranks for the rest of the campaign. In the recession, as they try to pay off the debt of the stadium and still compete at the top level, Wenger’s famed economic shrewdness is what the club needs if it is to survive and compete with the overpowering element of their Premier League rivals. After the turmoil at Portsmouth, perhaps angry fans need to realise that the man who has the reigns at the Emirates is economically aware and trying to steer the club out of financial difficulties very skilfully. If he is replaced, the new manager would have the same limited resources but not the same economically brilliant brain.

Indeed many could argue that Arsenal have been a success story given the problems thrown at them throughout the season. A huge blow to the season was losing van Persie which was followed by a demoralising defeat to Chelsea at home back in November, leaving them 11 points off the top. After that crushing loss at the Emirates, few would have predicted the side would reach the top of the table by January scoring a plethora of goals to boot. Fans and pundits alike have come to the point of questioning the Frenchman’s methods, but who else would fill the void if a keen Real Madrid came beckoning to Wenger luring him away from north London? Le Professeur has long strived to create a legacy at Arsenal, building effectively his fourth team and his departure would leave a hole in the club and risk half the current squad following their leader, causing an implosion that would be hard to recover from. Wenger has won seven major trophies in his tenure in north London and after four trophyless seasons the board claim to still back him. It is unlikely that the Arsenal board will look to replace him, so it seems the only way Wenger will leave Arsenal is by leaving of his own accord. After Wenger’s years of laying the foundations, it is unlikely Arsenal will look to fire their studious manager and try race to the title without the Va Va Voom they have grown so accustomed to.

I think if we dont win the title he should do the wise thing and go i for 1 have had enough of his excuses, i know there will be some who will say our team is young this and that whats the guarantee that this team will stay together for the next 2/3 years if they dont win anything. We have only 3 world class players in our squad 1 is injured the 2nd is 28 years old and the 3rd eventually wants to play for Barca take them three out of the squad and will never finish in the top 4,wengers had enough time!

Al of Adelaide - Just focussing on buying instant success is reflective of what is plaguing the developed world at the moment. Trading debt for a chance of success now. No focuss on sustainability or long term success. Assuming you could, would you swipe ur card for a million dollar sports car today and pay it off later? Even if we did drop huge cash now, we've gotta face the fact that its prolly not gonna guarantee us any trophy. We've seen what injuries can do etc etc. Whilst I disagree that we should even entertain the thought of Wenger leaving, the article was an interesting balancing exercise. However, I'd just like to comment specifically on this point that the writer of the article makes - 'for a club the size of Arsenal'. I have to keep reminding myself myself that whilst we achieve like a big club, we arent really on the same tier as the largest clubs in the world - both in terms of size and fan base. In any event, the reason why we even think like this is because of what Wenger has accomplished so far. Only problem with his success is, the economics have not yet quite caught up to the perception that Arsenal projects i.e. its no where near what Abromovich, throws around or what Man Utd or Barca actually generate through its franchise.

What is this non-sense of Wenger leaving? No manager on the planet can do what he is doing, we are 6 points off the top and had we had a draw vs Man Utd and Chelsea we'd be on 54 points, 1 point away from Man U and 2 from Chelsea.... How on earth is this deserving of a sack? we lost 2 games against better opposition and suddenly he deserves the sack? Yeah we need more experienced players, but isnt this being addressed with time? Diaby is getting better, Song has improoved dramatically and in Ramsey and Wiltshire we have 2 very promising players. We have a culture in this club to not spend beyond our resources and I am proud that out sucess is dictated by our support, not our owner's bank account, success will come if this squad stays together, perhaps a new GK would help but getting a new GK, DMC and Striker is just stupid as would cause conflict between the players as it would create too much competition and demoralise youngsters already at the club and any future youngster signings. You want experienced players? we are getting them right now, our players are learning things when we drop points and perform badly, everytime the Emirates moans in unison when a bad pass is made, etc....

Frenchman is unwilling to change his policies and Arsenal will find it hard to keep up with MU and Chelsea. Is about time for him to leave Arsenal.

I'm probabilly the bigest Arsenal fan in India. Have been an Arsenal fan for the last 30 years. By far the best manager ever, he has faith in his own abilities of grooming youngsters to become great players. Something Arsenal fans should be proud of. Clubs like Man U, Real, Barca, Milan buy readymade players, how many of them can make a good player ? Arsene Wengar is the Best and I am proud and privilaged to have him as manager of my favourite team.

Everyone says Chelsea have been amazing this season yet they find themselves top of the table by one point with no way near the same injury crisis as man u and arsenal. Arsenal have just played 4 games very big games in a row with nasri returning to the game for man u diaby returning to the game against chelsea and clichy having just played one or two games after being injured all these players were not match sharp or fit. you can say arsenal didnt step up to the play in these games but wen u play so many big games in a row and ur team is not fully fit its difficult against teams in form. 6 points of the top is not bad there fixtures are much tougher Wenger is a great manager ferguson didnt win anything for 6 years and wenger has created a winning mentality were better than last year and its obvious what we need a striker!

What Arsenal really need right now is someone in Adelaide telling us what's what. While pretty well every club in the Premiership has massive debts and some like Pompey may go under at any second Arsenal are solvent. We have state of the art training facilities designed, bought and paid for by Wenger. We have a state of the art stadium unfortunately with debts to match. We have the best batch of upcoming youngsters in world football and a squad that's the envy of 99% of the world. We're in the Champions league every season. There are at a rough estimate about 200 clubs across the world who would kill to get Wenger as their manager why on earth would we let him go? Why should Arsenal go into massive debt in order to appease some clown on the other side of the world when we are one of the world's top clubs? Fly back to the Adelaide Crows.

By Al of Adelaide on 12 February 2010 at 12:10

You say: 'If he is replaced, the new manager would have the same limited resources but not the same economically brilliant brain.' - you cant possibly know that 100%. You also say: 'and his departure would leave a hole in the club and risk half the current squad following their leader.' - Would they and would they be wanted by say Real Madrid???? Arsenal once again struggle because they are TOO STINGY to pay the big money others pay to get the EXPERIENCED players needed to win the EPL and Champions League. We paid 13? million for Arsharvin and for that money you get WORLD CLASS PLAYERS that can HELP YOU WIN TROPHIES! Piss poor Arsene

it would be a really stupid idea if Arsenal fans even thought of getting rid of Wenger. Compare Arsenal with all the other teams, they are still a major player in the Premier League. Man City have spent Millions already and are trying to get to Fourth place while Arsenal have spent virtually Zero and are still in the title race with only 6 points behind Chelsea and 5 behind Man U. Liverpools player value is far greater than Arsenals, so where are they? They could get 5th spot if they are lucky. Tottenham spent much more than Arsenal have, yet they are fighting only for 4th spot. Arsenal are also still in the fight for Champions League. If Wenger goes, who would you want to replace him? Wenger is the best thing to have happened for Arsenal. He made this club self sufficient while others are in Debt. If Arsenal win with the current team, then it would be a much better feeling than Chelsea winning with the team they have. It would be like a club winning in a self sufficient way rather than chelsea spending millions and buying the cup. I would hate it if Arsenal spent millions and virtually bought the title. Yes they have not won anything for 4 years, but I can see it coming. having said that, a decent striker is really all we need. I would agree that Arsene should have bought someone in the January Transfer Window, but I am confident there will be atleast one signing in the Summer.

Arsenal have a long term plan and are sticking to it. We are competing with the world's best at every level, in every competition without being saddled with the massive debts accrued by Liverpool and Manchester United and without the 'Sugar Daddy' plaything status of Chelsea and Manchester City. We spend only from what we earn and we have opted to cultivate in the majority, our own emerging talent within the club, rather than pay huge sums for them from elsewhere. We do consistently add one or two players per season from outside, if and when someone suitable becomes available. We sit 6 points from the top with 36 points to play for and none of the other top 4 sides still to play. We are yet again in the last 16 of the Champions League. Yes, we have not won a trophy for 5 years and because of that some fans are frustrated. That's what this beautiful game is all about. Ups and downs, frustration, desire and ecstasy. That trophy will come and it won't mean we have become a great side because of it. We are a great side right now, and have been a great side since Arsene Wenger walked in the door. Anyone with even half a brain knows that. When Arsenal come to town everyone wants to see them. When Arsenal come to town, win or lose, there's going to be a show. In Arsene we trust.
