Man Utd look to Real Madrid midfielder as Modric alternative

Wednesday 20 June 2012

Manchester United could be turning their attention to Real Madrid’s Fernando Gago in their attempt to strengthen their midfield.

Reports from Spain say that Roma have opted against buying the Argentinean who spent the season on loan at the Serie A club – they did have a first option clause arranged but decided not to activate it.

The Red Devils had been in the race to sign Luka Modric but Tottenham’s valuation appears to be too expensive for the Premier League runners-up and they will turn their attention to Gago instead. The 26-year-old wants first team football and the North West outfit could be prepared to offer him just that.

Gago played a total of 30 games for Roma last year but only managed 1 goal, in a 2-1 win against Lecce. Since signing for Real Madrid in 2007, the playmaker has played a total of 121 games again only scoring once. He has been a regular in the Argentina national team, making 38 appearances but despite being a regular he was not included in the 2010 World Cup squad.
