Premier League could introduce goal-line technology next season

Friday 06 July 2012

After football’s law-makers gave the go-ahead for the use of goal-line technology the Premier League could be among the first competitions to authorise its introduction, with the systems potentially in place as early as partway through the new season, Press Association has reported.

Two methods were approved by the International Football Association Board (IFAB) -the HawkEye system used in other sports such as tennis and cricket, and GoalRef, an approach that favours a micro-chipped ball. PA notes that HawkEye believe they could have their equipment installed in the 20 Premier League grounds by January, while the Premier League will discuss how to proceed with the two manufacturers.

Alex Horne, general secretary of the Football Association, added that HawkEye could be used at Wembley for the FA Cup semi-finals and final, as the system that was put in place for a trial during the England vs. Belgium friendly is still at the national stadium. Horne went on to say that while England internationals and Premier League games are out of the FA’s remit, the cup is their jurisdiction and if HawkEye agree, the system could be turned on later in the season.
