Club Focus - Liverpool - Resiliant Liverpool cannot see off Arsenal as Reina lends a helping hand

By Mark Jones

Tuesday 17 August 2010

New season, same old drama, and while that might sound like the kind of tagline that you would see at the of an ever-so-slightly over the top Sky Sports advert - perhaps featuring a strutting Eric Cantona - Liverpool do seem intent on entertaining the nation at the moment. Three months after ending a season that provided rival supporters with ample opportunities for mirth and merriment at their expense, there was to be another chance to bask in a Reds mistake at the end of their opening match of the season. This time it was different however, this time it was a cruel and unusual punishment at the end of a performance that gave home fans plenty to be proud of.

For the vast majority of the first half in the Sunday afternoon Merseyside sunshine, Liverpool were intent to let Arsenal have the ball and then look on as they struggled to do anything with it other than pass it from side to side. The Gunners looked quicker and fitter, perhaps down to the fact that only four of their starting line-up played at the World Cup - with all of them getting knocked out in the group stages - compared to everyone from the Liverpool side bar David N'Gog featuring in South Africa. With the first period drawing to a close, Roy Hodgson would have been looking forward to getting his men into the dressing room for his first ever Premier League half time team talk as Liverpool manager. There was already enough to do, but then the task got a whole lot harder.

The fact that Joe Cole was late and clumsy with his tackle on Laurent Koscielny over in the corner between the Anfield Road End and the Main Stand is undeniable, but awarding the midfielder a first career red card on his Liverpool league debut was harsh. While it did appear that the French defender was hurt by Cole’s tackle - initially at least - surely anyone who knows about football and the Premier League will know that the England man would not have set out to injure the Arsenal debutant. It was a yellow card offence, but Cole will now miss three league matches, only returning for the trip to Manchester United on September 19th. Nevertheless, he will be available for the Europa League clash with Trabzonspor on Thursday night, when he will no doubt be eager to perform well and show his true qualities, as will a certain other Liverpool player.

We goalkeepers live in a small land between mistakes and saves,” said Pepe Reina in the immediate aftermath of Liverpool winning the FA Cup in 2006, a match in which he had been widely blamed for two of West Ham’s three goals in the final, but then recovered to save three of the Hammers’ spot kicks in the penalty shootout. How right he was, and how nice it would have been had his typical, world class 86th minute save from Rosický been the Spaniard’s last action of the match on Sunday afternoon, but fate was to have a cruel intervention.

It was a blow that - for their second half performance alone - Liverpool did not deserve to take. Down to 10 men against one of the best teams in Europe, the Reds took the game to their visitors, aided by the in-form N'Gog’s thrilling strike so early on in the period. They then could - and perhaps should - have scored a second, but a pride in the Reds’ battling, determined display should remain the overriding emotion from their first league match of the season, and not anger at Reina’s late spill. For 45 minutes, Liverpool’s 10, and at times nine men - who knows where the concussed Daniel Agger, who took a ball to the face, thought he was in the game’s closing moments - showed real resilience and an almost iron will not to be breached. Javier Mascherano will probably never be seen in a Liverpool shirt again but his commitment to the cause was second to none - at one point he closed down the entire Arsenal midfield - as the Argentinian followed on from the examples set by central defenders Jamie Carragher and Martin Škrtel in trying to keep the Gunners at bay, which they did for 90 minutes until Reina’s late lapse.

As tough as that would have been for the goalkeeper, Hodgson and certainly Cole to take, the positives were there for all to see. Amidst the many mistakes that Liverpool made last season, supporters were more upset with a perceived lack of effort from their players. Well, the effort and endeavour are back, now if they can just cut out the errors then the reasons for positivity could be getting supporters dizzy. Not as dizzy as Agger on Sunday afternoon, but optimistic all the same.

Think the gunners were extremely lucking to get a point on Sunday, OK - Arsenal had plenty of possesion (but that's there game anyway) - also seemed to pass sideways on through the middle. Mr Wegner needs to get the team playing the whole width of the pitch, in my view it was a mistake putting Walcott through the centre, against 10 men Arsenal needed to play wide and pull the defenders with them to create space in the middle. Just glad (sorry LFC fans) for Riena's massive mistake at the end of the match, as we didn't look like scoring at all - even if we did have more possesion, corners, etc.

wats goin to happen to pool wen the gerrard story breaks in all the newspapers??? same ting wat happend gerrard last season

By Anonymous on 17 August 2010 at 15:04

shouldnt it read "dominat" rather than "resiliant" in the headline? ;-)

By jeff on 17 August 2010 at 14:36

This piece is pretty damned biased. The other recent Liverpool piece; http://www.adifferentleague.co.uk/p6_2_4029_liverpool-analysis-reina-error-an-unfair-end-but-question-marks-remain-for-hodgson-after-arsenal-draw.html was much more accurate i think

By eddie on 17 August 2010 at 14:13

hahaha rere mate your mental son, i dont care if you where the third most represented club at the world cup, they must have had that on there mind last season ay when you finished seventh, fans from teams like yourselves living in the past, we make no excuses for our failures, we havent had money to spend and yet have finished in the champ places ten years in a row, we've been financing a state of the art stadium so that revenue makes us a self efficient so that we can support ourselves and not have to find buyer after buyer to fund us to win anything, u dont think ull find many who played??? diaby, clichy, sagna, vela, fabregas, van persie, song, eboue, all first team players, and your telling me your team was jaded from the world cup?? lets see how u do once you get your ownership sorted bud, will be good once your partially funded by the goverment of china, i think youll find its you who will stay out of the top four for a while to come my friend. good luck.

By rere on 17 August 2010 at 12:29

and eddie for teh record a bit graceless re our debt situation. I can only assume that you believe yourselves to be sweet in that department, and if so WHY NO TROPHIES lately. When we get our ownership sorted yoru will be put out to pasture mate.

By rere on 17 August 2010 at 12:27

erm Eddie - we were teh third most represented club at teh world cup, and we too had players in the final. If you examined your squad closely, i don't thnink youll find that many who played actually - perhaps you'll correct me

By eddie on 17 August 2010 at 11:21

our defence is not good enough to play the high line? yet ngog was caught offside how many times? and sorry did u get any chances that came through our defence having a high line apart from the one where u had three players ofside and jacanovic or whatever his name is, who was impressive, went throught? the only team that shouldnt be playing a high line is liverpool with carragher at the back. As for having ten players at the world cup, hardly any of them did anything, our two best and most influential players where in the final, it wasnt a lethargic display from liverpool at all, we just dominated possesion like we normally do in games, nothing to be ashamed about from your side as we didnt create much, but to start bringing the trophies into it, fair play u won the champs league, a great achievment, have u ever won the premiership? while spending probably double what we have? no? lets see what you win this season, and if you can improve on seventh, while paying back your two million a week to the bank of scotland. good luck.

By silentstan on 17 August 2010 at 11:15

dominant liverpool????? check the stats man, possession, shots, corners

By mikey on 17 August 2010 at 11:02

to Paul, whilst i do happen to beleive that the arse do play good stuff how's your trophy cabinet looking lately? Barer than ours i do beleive unless you count the emirates cup! We had 10 of our starting line up in the world cup compared to 4 arsenal, hence the lethargic display in the 1st half, yet when we went down to 10 you surely cant argue that we had the better chances and if Torres was fit n played instead of ngog it would definately have been at least 2-0. Even in the 1st half how many great through balls did Gerrard play only for ngog to be caught offside when clean through? You're defence is not good enough to play the high line anymore, not since the days of Adams and co. As for the Cole tackle yes it was reckless and i can see why he got red but he was merely trying to block the clearance and was not 2 feet off the floor as the commentaters kept saying, in my opinion it was only marginally worse than Wilshire's challenge on Maschaepf89

By Tom on 17 August 2010 at 10:47

'Dominate' is pretty strong don’t you think? Especially considering Arsenal saw much more of the ball and had more attempts at goal. 'Stubborn' or 'Resilient' would be much more appropriate. Also I’m off the opinion the Mr Cole very much deserved his red. His challenge was wild; he jumped in an uncontrolled fashion and caught Koscielny high, he can have no complains. As for him "not being that sort of player", Cole, who I'm a fan of, is prone to the odd wild lunge. He a particularly famous example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxG6OaQUCgI

By paul on 17 August 2010 at 10:45

to micky we are in the champions league dose that cut your mustard are football works and when you have a bad keeper and do as well as we do it shows are football works and if we had are full team use would not stand a chance

By GunnerPete on 17 August 2010 at 10:41

ERMMMMMM....what game were you watching my scouse mate? Even when SKY were hyping up the second half.....AFC were in no danger despite the dusgusting Gerrard tackles and the ref being influenced by the kop. Arsenal got what good football deserves a result and if we had not had our reserve midfiled out and our top striker it would have been 3 points . So convinve yourselves mate but we can see that the Pool are going to be nothing but average......again!

By carlos on 17 August 2010 at 10:17

Hey mark...so tell me...were u a liverpool fan since young???

By rere on 17 August 2010 at 10:12

Ehm yeah alright Gooners. First half nerves from Liverpool, and WC lethargy was obvious. Second half we were all over you, from start up until about the last five minutes. you looked like little boys up against 10 (and 9 for some part) Just because we don't play the prissy football you expect everyone to play just cos you do, doesnt make you better. You had no real decent chance bar rosicky. That was it. An own goal got you opff teh hook. my feeling is it is you guys in for a long season, not us.

By Anonymous on 17 August 2010 at 09:44

Mark, do you even know what the word "dominant" means? Liverpool were dreadful in the first half, offered nothing going forward except long ball punts. Gerrard played wherever he wanted to, Cole was invisible (except for that dreadful tackle) and N'Gog simply offside. For a home team it was a shocking display. Keep in mind that the spine of the Arsenal team (song, cesc and VanP), Pool were only missing Torres. I think you lot have a long season in front of you.

By Bart on 17 August 2010 at 09:34

You should apply as a punter at the BBC, you'd fit right in with your skewed views.

By Mikey on 17 August 2010 at 09:28

Maybe didn't dominate possession but definately created the better chances. Only seem to remember 3 arsenal shots all game, and 2 of those were from free kicks. Calm down you gooners, its all well and good having lots of possession and loads of passes but when its all sideways or getting to the edge of the box and running out of ideas doesn't really cut the mustard does it?

By Tom on 17 August 2010 at 09:27

I couldn't disagree more. I was at the game as an arsenal fan and that was one of the poorest displays from a liverpool team i've ever seen. you were playing as if you were the away side and looked scared to do anything other than defend. very lucky fabregas wasn't playing as he would have made the difference in the final third. hodgson did well at fulham but he's now got you playing like fulham, which if i was a fan of liverpool i'd be completely embarassed about. no idea what game you were watching but if that was liverpool being dominant then you're in for a very long season once again.

By Sally on 17 August 2010 at 09:15

Cole totally deserved the red card! He could have broken the guy's leg. You're as bad as the guys on Sky Sports, it doesn't matter whether he meant to hurt him or whether he's that sort of player! Awful tackle, deserved red.

By JD Evans on 17 August 2010 at 08:26

yep totally dominant, except for shots....or possession, or corners, or shots on target, or action areas, or passes completed er or any field whatsoever....

By Fooook on 17 August 2010 at 07:30

Feck what ever you were smoking writing this article please send some my way will ya!!

By Jay on 17 August 2010 at 06:58

Content to let Arsenal have the ball - a nice way of putting the fact that they couldn't get near the ball in the frst half. Outclassed would be a better word for it.

By brdgunner on 17 August 2010 at 06:55

I think the Stats suggest a different story. How a home team with 40% can dominate is beyond me?

By Smudger on 17 August 2010 at 06:53

I think resilient would be a better choice of word than "dominant" in the headline
