Carragher pleads for good Owen reception.
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has pleaded with the Anfield crowd not to subject former Kop favourite Michael Owen to a chorus of boos during the charity match this weekend. Carragher wants his testimonial game to pass peacefully despite the presence of Manchester United striker Owen, who was given a hostile reception on his return to Merseyside last season. Owen, 30, scored 158 goals in 297 matches for the Reds, making him one of the deadliest strikers in Liverpool history, however, fans have since turned against him, thanks to his free transfer move to arch-rivals Man Utd last summer.
Queiroz: Meireles will be a hit.
Portugal Coach Carlos Queiroz has tipped Raul Meireles to be a success at Anfield. The former Manchester United assistant now works with Meireles on international duty and his confident the midfielder will show his quality in the Premier League, claims the Daily Mail. Speaking of Meireles, Queiroz said: “He's one of the pillars of the national team. He's a great player and an excellent professional. He has all the conditions to be a success in English football at Liverpool.” Liverpool signed the central midfielder for a fee in the region of £11m from Porto, the club at which he won four titles.
Barca reveal Mascherano fee.
Barcelona paid Liverpool 24m Euros to secure the services of Argentina captain Javier Mascherano, according to club technical director Andoni Zubizarreta. The defensive midfielder was desperate for a move to the Spanish champions, however, the size of the fee has been debated, with some reports suggesting he cost slightly less than the mentioned figure. However, Zubizarreta confirmed that Barca paid 20m Euros for Mascherano, in addition to another 4m Euros that came from a reduction in his salary. The total salaries of the Barcelona team has also decreased by 5% overall, according to ESPN.
