Arsenal Club Focus – What if Wenger doesn’t spend?

By Tom Gilchrist

Friday 19 August 2011

Picture the scene, it’s August 31st, or as it’s now more commonly known, transfer deadline day. You are sat at your PC watching last minute deals be concluded and the odd shock big move take place, but as the day wears on, it becomes clear that those purse strings just have not been loosened. The deadline is going to pass and Arsenal haven’t made a big signing. It is a real fear for all Arsenal fans, Arsene Wenger has said he will spend money, but only on the right player. Which would lead you to conclude that if he cannot find the right player for the right price then there will be no new signings and Gunners fans will pour onto forums and phone-ins to express their exasperation. But would no more signings really be as disastrous as it seems?

Popular opinion states that Arsenal need to replace Cesc Fabregas, probably Samir Nasri, and they require a centre back. But maybe, just maybe, the answer lies not in the form of a big money transfer, the answer in fact can already be found at the Emirates.

First up, Fabregas. How does that problem get solved? The answer is in the shape of Emmanuel Frimpong. Jack Wilshere would take over the duties of creative influence in the middle, which leaves a spot in midfield for young Frimpong to team up with Alex Song and provide that more aggressive and combative type of player they seem to lack. Not to mention the fact that Aaron Ramsey could easily slot into that position or swap with Wilshere.

At the time of writing, Arsenal had yet to concede a goal in the Premier League or really look as shaky as they did at times last season. The principal reason for this is Thomas Vermealen. Having him back this term is like a new signing and with the newly appointed vice-captain still only 25 years old, his best years are ahead of him - as long as he can stay clear of injury. If he does get injured, then Arsenal have a very talented young replacement in the shape of Ignasi Miguel. The young centre back is an excellent reader of the game and he was part of Spain’s successful Under 19s European Championship campaign where he started and finished every single game.

Finally we have the player whom the Dutch media dubbed “Ryodinho” while he was on loan at Feyenoord, it’s Ryo Miyaichi. The young Japenese winger possesses some dazzling skills and has the potential to be one of the most exciting players in Arsenal’s recent history. However, that word potential will strike fear into the hearts on many a fan. Should Wenger opt to bring through these three talented young players, rather than buy in quality, Arsenal fans will fear another trophyless spell.

But such is the talent of these players, that alongside the now matured crop of former youth starlets, Arsenal’s next trophy might not be that far off.

Hopefully you have rethought this blog after the weekends result, Wenger has been a great manager but clearly is losing the plot very quickly!!!! youth will not win us any trophies and after my last predicition of finshing outside the top five (unless he made 3-4 major signings) I believe the current crop could even drift to an Aston Villa level of playing for mid table.................agreed we have good youth players and Frimpong played well before his red but who is there to grab him and tell him to ease off after a stupid yellow, no-one. We only have 3-4 experienced 'old heads' left at Arsenal and none in centre midfield where matches are won..............

What a load of nonsense the above is, players running through the midfield and the defence from udinese unchallenged and suddenly a japanese winger is going to turn it all around, balls hitting crossbars from 35 yards where a second rate keeper is incapable of organising his defence and himself and Aaron Ramsey and frimpong are going to rectify this issue, wake up ! it was happening last term and nothing has changed !

no idea!!!! how will Arsenal progress picking youth players with no experience!!! Man Utd pretty much won at a canter last season and still brought in early 3 top quality players, and Ashley Young a proven Full International...........we miss Premier League experience, have sold Clichy, Fabregas, Nasri (surely) from our first team and replaced with, so far, Gervinho from France, and Jenkinson and Chamberlain from Div 1...............no logic and no trophies, we look so light weight this season I would not be surprised if we finshed outside of the Top 5. We couldn't even finish above 4th with Fabregas and Nasri............Wenger built this club and now is breaking it down..........

At last an article based on some common sense.. It is true as a club we have the next Barcelona team in our youth squad and probably worth £250 million when they are 25 (most are english so double the price) all we need is to add a couple of 14-18 mill plays to bolster our squad in the event of injuries (we all know we WILL have injuries! we lost a player a game through that last year). Wenger is a fastastic manager and businessman and i have faith in him. I think the people that dont are plastics that read media hype.. what does worry me is that wenger could invite pressure on himself buy not buying and trying to prove a point. Wenger don't gamble spend a little to accumilate a little even if its just the carling cup.. in wenger we still trust!

I agree with Alan. It is important to buy to replace the players lost. There aren't many midfield options left for Arsenal and I can't see many coming through. The Midfield currently lack drive and as a result the lone striker is usually isolated. I don't see a problem with the defence is Djourou or Squillaci play. The problem lies in Song who is unable to provide defensive cover on the counter attack, leaving the Centrebacks vunerable and looking inadequate. I can't see Jack Wilshere taking over the creative role nor do I see Arsenal playing Song and Frimmpong together on a regular basis. Arsenal's midfield was made to look good due to Fabregas. Without a player of his calibre alongside jack wilshere, I can't see the midfield dominating position as we used to. However the club has moved on from its over reliance on certain areas of the pitch and i'm sure we'll move on agiain. 15 years ago we relied on an extremely solid defence, 8 years ago we relied on the brilliance of Henry, for the last 4 years we've relied on Fabregas to carry the average players in our team and remain in contention for major trophies. Given the pattern, maybe it is time for the defence to step up again.

Wenger needs to pack his bag and go on a long vacation with David Dean, I think the fans have had enough. So Cahill is not good enough to be in the team then how did Squillaci get in? If Squillaci is quality then sorry AW has lost his talent 6 years back. Last season if AW spent money on One defender we would have won the League his arrogance toped with his ego ruined it for the club. If he is so keen on development and finding young players then let him take care of the B team. Get some one in for the first team who will spend and that would make sense for people paying a 100 quid to watch the Arsenal!!!!!

squad depth? it's all very well having young players ready to come in but during any season suspensions and injuries take there toll. Arsenal already had one of the smaller squads last season. Since then Fabregas, Denilson, Vela, Eboue, Clichy, Emmanuel Thomas, Botelho and Bartley have left or gone on loan. With Nasri, Bendtner, Watt and Almunia likely to follow. 12 players, with only Gervinho, Jenkinson, Chamberlain, Campbell come in 3 of them under 20. How good the youngsters like Frimpong are is in some ways immaterial. The small squad with a potential net loss of 8 players will struggle to put players on benches at times. Wenger needs to buy for all sorts of reasons
