Cardiff 2-0 Blackburn - Carling Cup offers no respite for under-fire Kean

By Andrew Tuft

Tuesday 29 November 2011

Blackburn Rovers crashed out of the Carling Cup at the hands of Championship side Cardiff City in a 2-0 defeat to heap more pressure on beleaguered manager Steve Kean. Kenny Miller and Filip Kiss scored the goals to put the Welsh side into the semi-finals.

Miller opened the scoring after 19 minutes, latching on to Aron Gunnarsson’s through ball to slot past Rovers goalkeeper Mark Bunn. Kiss doubled the advantage five minutes after half-time, converting Anthony Gerrard’s header from Peter Whittingham’s corner from a yard out.

After going two goals down early in the second-half Blackburn managed just one shot on target from that point, and instead came closer to falling further behind than reducing the deficit. David Goodwillie drew a save from Tom Heaton but Cardiff full-back Kevin Naughton sent a powerful effort across the Blackburn penalty area.

Cardiff had chances throughout the game, with Miller unlucky not to add to his tally, while Blackburn also saw efforts from Scott Dann, Grant Hanley and Ruben Rochina threaten the Bluebirds’ goal.

The match was played out in an emotional atmosphere following the death of Wales manager Gary Speed, with a minute’s applause, during which wreaths were laid, being held, as well as a minute’s silence and chants of “there’s only one Gary Speed” before kick-off.

Cardiff: Heaton; McNaughton, Gerrard, Turner, Taylor; Kiss (McPhail 78), Whittingham, Cowie, Gunnarsson, Conway (Ralls 83); Miller

Blackburn: Bunn; Lowe, Dann, Hanley, Givet; Formica, Petrovic (Rochina 70), Dunn, Pedersen; Blackman (Roberts 80), Goodwillie (Yakubu 80)
