Bellamy returns home but how will he fit into the Cardiff squad?

By Matt Bass

Thursday 19 August 2010

Whilst many of us mull over the thought of just how Cardiff City are planning on paying for Craig Bellamy's services, there can be little doubt in anybody's mind as to exactly why the Bluebirds have swooped to bring the hitman back to his homeland.

Having found himself frozen out at Eastlands, it was clear that the Welsh captain was not in Roberto Mancini's plans for the season, and so a move to pastures new was both a necessity and indeed an inevitability. With a fresh influx of talent to drool over in Manchester, something had to give and Bellamy was amongst the unlucky few. With rumoured interest from the likes of Spurs, Celtic, Fulham and even the unthinkable thought of retirement, some would argue that the odds were stacked against Dave Jones to pull off one of the transfer coups of the summer. The lure of regular football coupled with the close proximity of Bellamy's family gave Cardiff the upper hand and so a season long loan was agreed. A fantastic piece of business in South Wales most will agree. The questions that remain now is exactly how he fits into the Bluebirds team and what does his signing mean for the club?

First and foremost, the acquisition of the former Liverpool and Blackburn forward is a clear statement of intent. For all of the doubters, last season's beaten play-off finalists are serious contenders this year. A repeat of the near miss at Wembley in May is not on the agenda at the Cardiff City Stadium, and all eyes are trained on promotion. For a club who's ambition was questioned by one of it's own following a shortage of new arrivals, life would seem a lot rosier right now. Bellamy's signature follows swiftly in the wake of Hull City's Seyi Olofinjana and Wigan's Jason Koumas joining on loan, illustrating the depth of talent now at Dave Jones' disposal. These players may not set the world alight but they are experienced professionals who have played at the highest level. Their presence would be welcome in Premier League squads, let alone those in the Championship.

The irony of the situation however, is that Bellamy could soon step into the boots of just the player who was calling for new blood in the squad. Former Newcastle striker Michael Chopra drew plenty of attention in expressing his frustration at the summer transfer activity for the Bluebirds, but in the Welsh captain, City now have a player more than capable of ousting Chopra. It should of course be noted that City's summer spending was somewhat hindered by the transfer embargo placed on them. Should Chopra be destined for the bench, he may yet have a few games to save his position, with Bellamy himself admitting that he currently lacks match sharpness. Of course only time will tell how Jones will utilise his new striker but with a forward line made up of a combination of Bellamy, Chopra, Jay Bothroyd and potentially Ross McCormack should he remain at the club, City have a very potent striking arsenal indeed. Playing any combination of the four together would strike fear into the hearts of most Championship defences.

Thanks for your comments James and gabz. James - When I said how they will pay for him, I didn't mean the exact figures so to speak, more marvelling at the thought of how a club that has suffered well documented financial trouble are now able to bring in a top Premier League player on loan. The figure of £10-25K per week is still rather vague but again referring back to the club's reported financial trouble, I would feel a little unfomfortable as a fan if it was my club suddenly splashing out that sort of money (albeit clearly a bargain if it's a figure the club can afford for the player in question). gabz - Firstly, I'm not actually a Cardiff fan. I do take your point that Bellamy will more than likely be a regular starter, and if all goes well he will score a hat full of goals in the Championship. However, very few players start every game in a season. Cardiff face a minimum of 46 league fixtures (49 if they end up in the playoff final) coupled with the FA Cup and League Cup. Whilst Man City will compete in Europe, Cardiff will play a similar number of fixtures throughout the season and so squad rotation is vital. Similarly (and I don't want to tempt fate!) there is also the potential for a player not to settle as quickly as hoped. I appreciate you can't plan for such an outcome, but it's reassuring for Bluebirds fans to know that they won't be relying exclusively on Bellamy to fire them into the top flight. As a final point, Cardiff have already progressed to the second round of the League Cup and picked up four points from two games. Of course Bellamy is a great player, but why change a winning formula? Incidentally, I also agree with you that he should still be in the Man City squad! Thanks again for your comments guys!

haha... what a daft "question" lets face facts yeah... Bellamy is on a different level to every single one of your players, and in my opinion should still be in our 25 but thats a different topic for another day. the question is'nt how will Bellamy fit in, but how is the squad going to be shaped around Bellamy. i have no clue who has which position nailed down in your squad, no disrespect intended there i just don't know, but the answer is simple... if Bellamy is used as a wide man then whoever usually plays there makes way and settles for a squad roll on the bench. if played up top then he will take the/one of starting rolls in that position again leaving a member of your starting 11 on the bench. rather than thinking of how he will fit in i am sure that your gaffer will be more challenged thinking of the right blend of players to 'fit around him' leaving Bellamy to play naturally and freely whichever position it is he will end up occupying. if anything you will now see a better side of those players already there as watching the little man week in and out amazes you. the way in which he can drag defenders out of position, commit them then beat them, his goal threat and his recently aquired ability to provide is just wowing. going to miss him to be honest, hated him when he first signed now its a horrid thought of knowing he's left. trust me cardiff fans your in for a treat the excitement is worth it!

Cardiff are paying Bellamy within the regions of £10,000-£25,000 each week depending on clauses- City pay the rest. That sum being less than Chopra's current wedge... That was on the back pages about 2 days ago. Keep up.
