ADL Daily - Knill signs new contract, Calderwood has work to do at Hibs and Pizarro achieves new record

By Martin Shillito

Tuesday 26 October 2010

Bury manager Alan Knill has signed a new contract which will see him at the club until the end of the 2011/12 season. The former Rotherham boss, 46, arrived at Gigg Lane on 5 February 2008 after Chris Casper was sacked by the Shakers’ hierarchy. Knill made 144 appearances for the club between 1989 and 1993, and has won 60 of his 136 games in charge. In his first full season in the hot seat in 2009 he achieved a play-off spot, only to be beaten by Shrewsbury on penalties. Last season he looked to be leading the club to another promotion opportunity through the play-offs, but the Shakers ended up ninth after a disappointing finish to the campaign. Bury currently lie third in League Two and the reward for another promising start to the season is a fresh contract. Knill’s assistant, Chris Brass, who also played for the club, has signed a contract of the same length.

New Hibernian boss Chris Calderwood has admitted he and his staff have a lot of work to do on the training pitch before results can start to improve. His side lost 4-2 against Aberdeen at Pittodrie at the weekend, and Calderwood was thoroughly disappointed his side went 4-0 down before starting to show some fight. Speaking to the club’s website, the former Tottenham Hotspur defender stressed his men must grow as a unit and develop the spirit within the camp: “We need to play as a team and not as good individuals. I can see that we need a wee bit of cohesion, team work and work on the training pitch. We have all made mistakes and I will include myself in that assessment, but we will win and lose together.” Hibernian are currently ninth in the Scottish Premier League and their next fixture is away at Dundee United on Saturday.

Claudio Pizarro has become the most successful foreign goalscorer in Bundesliga history. His 134th Bundesliga goal in Werder Bremen’s 4-1 demolition of Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday meant he overtook the haul of Brazilian striker Giovane Elber, who netted 133 goals in his time at Stuttgart and Bayern Munich between 1994 and 2003. The 32-year-old Peruvian forward’s first goal of the season at Borussia-Park confirmed his status as the most successful foreign goal-getter the Bundesliga has seen, and when asked how the news of his record would go down in his homeland, Pizarro revealed: “They will definitely all sing and be very happy that a Peruvian has gone into German football history. It is important for my country. They will surely celebrate a little bit.” Pizarro has got his goals playing for Bayern and in two spells with Bremen.
