Football League Daily – Micky Adams faces difficult challenge at Sheffield United, Nigel Pearson elated with Hull
Wednesday 09 February 2011
New Sheffield United manager, Micky Adams, yesterday followed the lead of fellow manager Phil Brown, by publicly acknowledging just how difficult his post at Brammall Lane truly is: “Obviously it is worrying, it was a difficult job when I took it on and it is even more so now. Can it get much worse? I hope not. But you have got to be fearful that it could.” Adams' men are four points adrift of safety, having been beaten 3-0 by Ipswich in their last outing – their third successive Championship defeat.
Indeed, one has to look back to the middle of December for the Blades' last victory – a 1-0 defeat of promotion chasing Swansea. “Everyone at this club has got to take collective responsibility for the situation we are in,” continued Adams. “The players, the staff, previous managers, and myself, even though, I have only been here for less than two months. There is nothing to be gained from hiding that fact. I will have to go away and question myself and I am sure, if I have missed a trick, someone will let me know.”
In contrast to the downbeat Adams, Hull manager Nigel Pearson has revealed just how elated he is that his Humberside outfit are beginning to find the form that saw them achieve promotion just three years ago. Pearson's team thumped Northern rivals Scunthorpe 5-1 at the weekend, a result that saw them move up to 12th position – just seven points off an unpredicted play-off spot. “It was a great result for us,” said an understandably upbeat Pearson, before he went on to say: “On the back of three very tough games that we worked exceptionally hard to get draws out of, it was always going to be important to pick a win up.” Since the sides last met, a game that ended in victory for the Iron, Hull have lost just one in fifteen – a stark contrast to Scunthorpe's own record of not having won a single one of their last six matches.
New arrival Matty Fryatt has been instrumental in Hull's impressive recent form; it was his hat-trick that downed Scunthorpe – his fourth, fifth and sixth goals in just seven appearances since joining from Leicester. “I do not think it could have gone much better,” said Fryatt, when asked about his start to his Hull career. “It is nice to come into a club and have such an impact straight away. I am delighted about that. I am pleased with how the team is performing and everything, so it has been a really good start for me here.” Hull fans will be hoping that Fryatt continues his fine goal scoring form when former Tigers manager, Phil Brown, leads his struggling Preston side to the KC stadium at the weekend.
