AFC Wimbledon set for Marcus Bent capture

By Tom Bowers

Saturday 06 August 2011

Football League new boys AFC Wimbledon are understood to be closing in on the signing of Marcus Bent after the former Everton striker underwent a medical at Kingsmeadow.

Bent, who is currently a free agent, was recently released by Birmingham City and has caught the eye of manager Terry Brown after captain Danny Kedwell left for Gillingham last month.

Brown has bolstered his striking options already this summer with the signing of Charles Ademeno but told the Surrey Herald he acknowledges the need for a further addition: "We are definitely looking to get a striker in. It is just a numbers game with four strikers for two positions because we could get an injury at any time."

The news comes in the wake of a disappointing result for the Dons who suffered a 3-2 home defeat to Bristol Rovers in their League Two curtain-raiser.

The Dons had fought back from 2-0 down with goals from Jamie Stuart and Ademeno cancelling out early efforts from Scott McGleish and Matt Harrold.

However with just five minutes left defender Brett Johnson handled in the area and Adam Virgo despatched the resulting penalty to give the Pirates a deserved away win.
