Boyd left disappointed at late penalty decision

By Tom Bowers

Monday 15 August 2011

Peterborough winger George Boyd was left ruing his side's luck at Bloomfield Road yesterday as he was denied a late penalty.

After triggering a late Posh rally with an 82nd minute goal Boyd tumbled in the area under the challenge of a Blackpool defender but his vociferous protests were waved away by referee Carl Boyeson.

The 25-year-old spoke to the Peterborough Evening Telegraph after the game and was adamant that Boyeson made the wrong decision: “There is no doubt it was a penalty. One of the Blackpool lads caught me as I was getting through into the box.

“I’m not going to go down in that great position unless I am fouled, but the referee wasn’t interested."

Peterborough held their own throughout the match amassing an impressive 18 attempts at goal and Boyd believes a late equaliser would have been a just reward for their efforts: “It was a real shame because we deserved a draw at the very least. In fact I don’t think Blackpool could have argued if we had won the game because we battered them for long periods.

“We are gutted to have been beaten but we really have to take the belief from that because Blackpool are certain to be right up there at the end of the season.”

Peterborough are keen to consolidate their place in the Championship this season after finishing rock bottom in the 2009/10 campaign and will have to have their wits about them on Wednesday night as they face a tricky away clash at Millwall.
