Cotterill eyes three more recruits before window slams shut

By Tom Bowers

Friday 19 August 2011

Portsmouth manager Steve Cotterill wants three more players before the transfer window closes in 13 days time.

Following the captures of Benjani Mwaruwari and Erik Huseklepp in the last week Pompey now have a squad of 19 players but Cotterill still believes more are needed to be able to cope with a full Championship campaign.

On a number of occasions last season Pompey were forced to delve into the youth team or not name a full compliment of substitutes due to their thread-bare squad but Cotterill told The Portsmouth News he is confident in his pursuit of new faces: "Hopefully we can add some more faces before the window closes. I need to see how far the money stretches first but I know who they are so hopefully we can get there.”

Cotterill also teased a foray into the loan market, a system that brought in six players last season including Greg Halford and Ritchie De Laet: “We haven’t gone into the loan market yet, so there could be something there. Mind you, we had used them all up this time last year!”

Portsmouth travel to Bristol City in the Championship tomorrow hoping to avenge the 2-1 defeat at Ashton Gate in March that brought an abrupt end to six successive victories and a post-war Portsmouth league record of 636 minutes without conceding a goal.
