Bullard rejects Premier League advances to join Ipswich

By Tom Bowers

Thursday 25 August 2011

Ipswich Town have pulled off a major coup by signing out-of-contract midfielder Jimmy Bullard.

Bullard had his lucrative contract terminated by former club Hull City last week having been suspended since July after a breach of club discipline on a pre-season trip to Slovenia.

The charismatic midfielder wasn't short of offers having held talks with Premier League side QPR but the 32-year-old plumped for Portman Road, a place where he enjoyed a fruitful three-month loan spell last season.

In fact he was so highly regarded by the club's supporters that he was voted Player of the Year despite making just 16 appearances for the Tractor Boys.

Manager Paul Jewell was delighted and told the club's official website the signing ends a summer-long pursuit for the player: "We had been chipping away at Jimmy and Hull all summer to try to sort something out but Hull were adamant that he wouldn't be going out on loan again unless someone paid his wages.

"It's a great feeling to know that even though he had the opportunity to go to a Premier League team he still wanted the opportunity to come here. Hopefully he can do what he did for us last year and beyond.''

Bullard could be involved on Saturday as Ipswich look to bounce back from the 7-1 defeat to Peterborough last weekend when they host Leeds.

He could also be joined by striker Daryl Murphy who has put pen to paper on a season-long loan deal from Celtic.
