Birmingham set for fixture pile-up

By Tom Bowers

Friday 26 August 2011

Championship side Birmingham City face a minimum of 56 games this season following their progression in the Europa League last night.

The 3-0 victory over Portugese outfit C.D Nacional sealed the Blues' place in the group stages of the competition and they now face a number of rescheduled games as a result.

Their clash on the 27th September against Leeds has already bit the dust and more could be set to follow.

As well as six further potential European fixtures Birmingham also await tomorrow's Carling Cup draw after this year's winners were given special dispensation by the Football League to enter at the third round stage despite their relegation.

The Blues must also contend with a third round FA Cup tie in January in a season that is sure to test both the depth and fitness of Chris Hughton's squad.
