Zubizarreta denies Bale negotiations

By David Redshaw

Sunday 05 February 2012

Former Barcelona goalkeeper and current director of football Andoni Zubizarreta has categorically denied recent reports he recently travelled to London to negotiate a deal for Tottenham Hotspur defender Gareth Bale.

“It’s not true I was in London to negotiate with anybody and I’ve said a thousand times that 90 per cent of the players we want are already in the Barcelona first team or part of our youth academy.”

Zubizarreta was speaking at half-time during Saturday night’s game with Real Sociedad at the Camp Nou, and although Barca have shown an interest in the Welsh international they would be unwilling to pay Spurs’ asking price, which is sure to be around the €40m mark.

According to Sport, Zubizarreta has made several telephone calls to Bale’s representatives and hopes that during the summer he will be able to tempt the English club into parting with its greatest asset, much in the same way that both Cesc Fabregas and Alexis Sánchez arrived at the Camp Nou after protracted discussions.

However, the Catalans are understood to be unwilling to go beyond €30m for a player who set the Champions League alight with some sparkling performances last season.
