Michel replaces Marcelino at Sevilla
Former Real Madrid player and ex-Getafe boss Michel has replaced Marcelino García Toral as boss of Sevilla after the 46-year-old was dismissed on Monday following the 2-1 weekend defeat to Villarreal.
The Andalusians, who have slipped to 11th in the table and also been eliminated from Europe and the Copa del Rey, have not tasted victory since a 3-0 defeat of Getafe in early December and Marcelino has paid the price for a series of disappointing results. Sevilla President, José María del Nido and director of football Monchi held a meeting after the Villarreal game and took the decision to dispense with the services of the Asturian, who only took the reins at the Sánchez Pizjuán at the start of the current campaign.
Del Nido was initially understood to have wanted Real Mallorca boss Joaquín Caparrós, a former Sevilla Coach, but Michel was seen as the best man available as he has been without a club since leaving Getafe last year and has been given a contract until the end of this season.
If Michel manages to secure Champions League qualification this term he will then be offered a new deal: if not Sevilla will try to lure Caparrós back next summer.
