Malaga join list of Alvaro suitors

Malaga have joined the list of potential suitors for Racing Santander central defender Alvaro Gonzalez, according to Diario Sur.

The 22-year-old is a product of Racing’s youth academy and, despite the Cantabrians currently propping up La Primera, has distinguished himself with some outstanding performances this term, having made his first-team bow at the end of last season in a 2-0 home win against Real Mallorca.

With bottom-of-the-table Racing currently 10 points adrift of safety it is more than likely Alvaro will leave El Sardinero if, as expected, the club suffers relegation, and cash-rich Malaga are set to step in and offer him top-flight football again next year.

However, they will face stiff competition for the Spanish Under-21 international, with Sevilla having previously been linked with him, although the axing of former Racing boss Marcelino at the Sanchez Pizjuan means the Andalusians’ interest may well have cooled.

Atletico Madrid have also understood to have been monitoring his progress while there was believed to have been an enquiry from Ukrainian side Dnipro last December.
