Falcao: Bucharest would be a dream

Wednesday 18 April 2012

Atletico Madrid striker Radamel Falcao says it would be a ‘dream’ for him to again reach the Europa League final, to be held in Bucharest on May 9.

Los Colchoneros take on Valencia at the Vicente Calderon on Thursday and Falcao is hoping to emulate his achievements of last season when he was part of the Porto side that beat Braga 1-0 in the final in Dublin, when he scored the only goal of the game. Besides picking up a winner’s medal the 26-year-old also has fond memories of the competition as a whole after setting a new goalscoring record of 17 goals in 14 games, surpassing Jurgen Klinsmann’s previous 15-goal benchmark.

“Right now I am only focused on this week’s game but the final in Bucharest is a dream for everybody,” said Falcao. “However, first we have to face Valencia and it will be very difficult.”

Whilst a Europa League final would be a welcome distraction from La Liga, the Colombian international acknowledges that at the start of the season the objective was to qualify for the Champions League.

“It’s no secret qualifying for the Champions League is not easy but mathematically it is still possible,” he says. It was one of our aims this season and there are still five games to go, so we have a chance and we’ll see what happens.”

Falcao also refutes suggestions his €40m capture was designed to appease fans who had seen Sergio Aguero and Diego Forlan leave the club.

“I did not come here so people could forget about ‘Kun’ and Forlan,” he insists. “I came to do my own work and make my own mark. I want to have success with Atletico Madrid."
